Growing willow for weaving is something I would love to do If I had space. I went to a willow structure making workshop at Nany y Bedd (Do you know it? My goodness me you are working so hard!! And making such a lot of progress. I`m hopeless with plant labels. I`ve just got used to trying to guess what things are. Rhubarb does take a while to establish and grow big enough to harvest from, so it will be a few years before you start wondering why you bought so many plants. Pruning those trees is a big job. You`re amazing for doing it on your own. I had to get a man in to help!!
@mymessyplot14 күн бұрын
I’m really bad at labelling but I’ve promised myself that I’ll do my best to label everything I’m putting in the ground here so I don’t regret it later! At my old allotment there was a huge and prolific rhubarb - it was there before I took on the plot so I can’t take any credit. I miss it a lot because it provided visual structure as well as an abundant crop. I’m wondering if nostalgia for that beauty made me buy so many 😅 I didn’t realise these new ones would take so long to get established. But it makes sense now I think of it, they are just bits of root at the moment. I have to confess, I did find the tree trimming very daunting, I put it off for ages. I think I’m going to have to build up my strength and fitness so that I can be competent with a proper size chainsaw. I’ll never be able to tackle large trees but I hope to manage smaller ones myself one day.

As you know, the trees that are covered in ivy might have survived the wind if you’d had time to chop through the ivy stems early enough in the year to give time for its leaves to die and fall off to leave the branches bare. Ivy turns the branches into sails :-( Soft, wet soil doesn’t help! John (when a young man) had that job to do so could have told us the best time. The trees on his parent’s farm were an important asset providing shelter for livestock, firewood and wood for all manner of purposes. He knew how to cut and lay a fence too. I wonder if you have any rows of trees originally planted for that purpose or marking an old fence line that they were part of in years gone by.
