I also have a turtle like you, do you let it eat vegetables with caramel?

Never have. Caramel is 100% sugar and sulcatas are supposed to limit soluble sugars.

He is lacking calcium, that's why he's pyramiding. While that food looks yummy his diet should be 80 percent hay and grasses. He needs a cuddle bone and a calcium supplement.
@stumpsulcatatortoise3 күн бұрын
Negative. Pyramiding is because of growth with lack of hydration. Only. The thing is, I cannot even find another tortoise that has grown this fast to compare. He has cuddle bone AND used miner-all. As I said, it is a hydration issue with slow growth. This is NOT a slow growth situation. Please find another sulcata that is 50lbs, 20" long and 2yrs 8mo. I would sincerely like to compare.

My Sulcata gets a handful of mixed salads, timothy hay and a few mazuri pellets soaked in water in the morning. She spends the rest of the day in the garden nibbling on the grass. Once a week she gets some fruit and a hibiscus flower. I also planted clover and dandelions in a separate part of the garden. Bonnie should be 2 years and 6 months old now. She was sold to me as a Japanese tortoise. After 5 minutes of googling I suddenly had a giant tortoise.....
@stumpsulcatatortoise5 күн бұрын
Giant tortoise 'Bon-chan' - This is the type of Japanese tortoise s/he was! LOL. Mine does a snack in the morning, then brunch before his office nap. Once he leaves the office he grazes in the yard until he comes in for 2 45minute soaks. After the soaks he's looking for his bedtime snack.

My sulcata is the same age as Stump. She weighs 1.6 kg. She gets food - about a handful in the morning. the food is always placed on an upside down tile so that it has a "ground for grinding". I don't know the name in English. Then she sleeps in her hut on the terrace and during the day she makes her rounds in her garden area, which I have enclosed with thick blocks and can enlarge as needed. There is another shelter there as a rain shelter and shade spot. She eats a lot of grass and 2-3 times a week she gets a hibiscus flower and mulberry leaves. Once a week she gets some fruit. Turtles love anything that is red. Dangerous when I have my red slippers on

I remember when they met in May of 2022. Stump was a bit over 3 months old and was half the size of Quincy. They had a stare down and Stump was frozen. Fast forward to this summer, they were both in the sun room and Quincy walked over to him and started eating off of his plate. Stump stood up with his back legs and tucked his head and front legs in. LOL!

This evening he returned when taking his walk, no Harper but the point is, he did not get a treat for interacting with her yesterday, just liked it and decided to return this evening. @stumpsulcatatortoiseАй бұрын
They are prone to eating rocks occasionally and people think that they get mineral supplements from this. We give him Miner-All calcium weekly but it doesn't help really. Does a 47lb tortoise that is 2yrs 6months sound like it needs a supplement? Can you find an example of a larger one for his age? Seriously, I've been looking high and low. I think it's just what they do. Easier digestion. One round through for grass doesn't digest all of it. This is why they continually eat stool including their own. Does he get Sepia scales? No. What are these?

Hi hi How much food by weight should a 5-year-old Sulcata tortoise eat in a day that weighs about 20 kilos eat? Thanks
@stumpsulcatatortoise2 ай бұрын
I can answer this exactly because Stump is 45.3lbs. Age doesn't matter. Mine eats about the size of his shell each day in grass/weeds/greens/etc. He didn't graze outside today at all and when he came in, after his soak, he ate an 18" pizza plate about 8-10" high with greens then went to bed.
@stumpsulcatatortoise2 ай бұрын
By weight that is 900-1100g or up to about 2.5lbs. This makes sense because I've read that they eat about 5% of their weight daily. Wait until they are 200lbs and eating 10lbs of food every day.

How house trained is he? How much of a clean up? Or do you give 'm bi-daily soaks to to do his thing there?
@stumpsulcatatortoise2 ай бұрын
He is not house trained at all. That said, he hangs out between 10:30 or 11 am until 3-5pm in my wife's office on substrate in one of those drain pans for a washing machine with a heat lamp. He usually poops in there, it is bagged with a rubber glove and thrown away and then he goes out. When he's done in the yard or going on a walk, etc. he walks to our sunroom to go inside. Once inside he ALWAYS gets an Aveeno bubble bath soak for 2 45 minute sessions regardless of if is peed or pooped more outside. When he is in his soak he usually pees the first round, urates the second round and then does the "moon walk" when he brings his member out. All of that goes down the drain. Then he gets a heated towel and a big plate of greens. Then he walks into his bed where he will emerge or be brought to the office.

@stumpsulcatatortoise2 ай бұрын
They grow at vastly different rates based on many factors but they need to be eating a food portion about the size of their shell every day. I have a video on preparing their food. I used Mazuri small tortoise LS for the first year for both Stump AND Figgy. Figgy was just under 2lbs @ one year, 6.5" long, 4.5" wide and 3" high. 2 weeks after one year Stump was 5lbs. Honestly I can't find many examples of a sulcata that has grown like him in 2yrs 5mo.
