Schubert is not ''one of most important'' composers from Austria, he is one the greatest. Besides, he wrote this masterpiece in 1827.

Yes, even as we listen to recording which I'm very thankful is here - and who knows how legal it is? - I don't understand why the poster would not tell us who is performing. Based on comments, I guess it's Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and, on piano, Alfred Brendel. If I spelled them right. >>> But the main thing I wanted to say - besides yes, this is absolutely beautiful - is to ask, how much of a miracle Brendel is? By many accounts he got little formal training after a fairly young age. 14? 16? And yet. But then probably about any pianist of his level, no matter what great amount of work and training they got, also had to be... a very, very specially gifted person. Thank you, Alfred.

Wow what a treat -- thank you. I'm a long-standing Fischer-Dieskau fan. I even love how he goes a little sharp at emotionall moments. Can''t help preferring Gerald Moore though, despite Brendel being so brilliant.

Was soll ich länger weilen, Dass man mich trieb’ hinaus? Lass irre Hunde heulen Vor ihres Herren Haus!

Even tho he was apparently member of Hitler iugend during WWII, the difficulties experienced in that unimaginable time are drawn on & feed his interpretation well. What a pity Schubert & Fischer Dieskau weren't Lutheran??? The tensions of Lutheran theology fit well with lots of written music.....beyond Bach & Brahms...

I think it's an austrian Music in reality, not german. The language is simply the same.

Austrian German is easier to understand than Bavarian German. Difference between say Scottish English, and Welsh English, or Donegal Irish and Munster Irish...but yes, like Mozart - Austrian. Must be an Italian influence somewhere...
