Wonderful talk, I particularly liked the part about the grandmother bringing her grandchild to the funeral. That seems very healthy to me. Namo Amida Butsu🙏

A pipe organ at a Buddhist temple is very very strange. I am not against it if people like it. Nothing inherently wrong with it. But I just don't understand what about it specifically is interesting to Buddhists. Was it actually a conscious desire to resemble a Christian church, or was this originally a Christian church building?

Hi StopFear - very good question! From what I understand, after WW2 buddhist temples within the BCA (Buddhist Churches of America) started using organs to make Buddhism and the temples, which were largely Asian at the time, more palatable to the non-Asian Americans and mitigate further violence towards temples. Someone actually tried to burn down Enmanji Temple but a kind and compassionate local Christian group saw it and put it out. They then kept vigil over the temple during the internment era. Enmanji Temple left the burns as a remembrance and installed a plaque in their honor. From what I understand, that is also why the Buddhist Churches of America used the word "Churches" in their name instead of "Temples". In Gassho!

This looks like the old multi-purpose room at Chugiak Elementary School in the 1960s where we learned this dance from the folk dance instructor that came out once a week from Anchorage.
