Improve road safety - save lives - reduce injuries is possible! Talking about HCD, Human Centered Design as a basis for problem solving... ever considered that we need a similar revolution in Personal Mobility as what drove Personal Communication. New technologies and requirements tend to lead to a reformat of products. I am talking resize, reshape, reengineer. Why not in automobility? Reformat the car to deal with modern traffic and make it more inclusive towards vulnerable road users? After all, is driving SUVs and trucks not like using bulky PCs when (desk) space is already limited, like in traffic? Why use a bigger transport mode than normally needed when only 1-2 people are on board? And now that we’re at it: when developing self-driving, why not start with a vehicle that’s safer to begin with, literally? Like a building constructor who makes sure to lay a solid foundation first. Sorry that I missed Kristin White's lecture, which I am now listening to, as I write this.

This woman is BRILLIANT 👏!! AVs have been released onto the highways and byways MUCH TOO SOON!! Too many kinks have NOT been worked out. 1 little kink can cost many, many lives!! AND she's correct - when making the conversion from human to automated ALL SPEED LIMITS NEED TO BE ABIDED BY and "AUTOMATICALLY!" NOW, do I feel humans drivers or the AV drivers better? Well, let's think about that for a brief moment. DO HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES?? YES! Who created the AV? HUMANS. HENCE... will AVs make mistakes? YES. So, IF humans make mistakes, and AVs make mistakes, as they're designed by HUMANS... then why take the risk of the AV? Am I supposed to agree to a certain % of fatalies as "acceptable losses" for the sake of technology and progress?! Am I supposed to accept that, corporations like "TESLA" who are seemingly more concerned with PROFIT MARGIN than "SAFETY," should or will continue to manufacture FLAWED VEHICLES at the expense of HUMAN LIVES?! NO! Give me a Flintstone mobile.

This is a significant symposium with HBCU engagement in transportation research. With transportation networks crisscrossing centers of minority population areas, USDOT must be congratulated for involving minority serving institutions in transpiration research.

Great presentation! I had not considered the effects of platooning on road wear, which seems to be a non-obvious benefit. Enjoyed seeing the full context for platooning and the cost analysis.

Mental health is not a consideration in Transport planning! this is an incredibly important area that is often overlooked. You can find Dr Rebecca Posner's paper that summarises the work that we conducted here: trl.co.uk/uploads/trl/documents/Mental%20health%20and%20transport_0.pdf The research aimed to understand how mental health could impact travel mode choice and explore the factors that influence or are barriers to accessing certain modes of transport and how these vary across different forms of mental health difficulties. I am not sure if you are aware but Prof. Roger Mackett, a visiting professor at University College London has also conducted work in this area you can find his initial study here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/662737/report-on-mental-impairments_final.pdf. work last year on behalf of the Department for Transport(UK) to expand the current guidance on accessible public realm. A stream of this work focused on this wider range of mental health difficulties experienced in England - you can find all of that research here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-public-realm-updating-guidance-and-further-research.
