I wonder if for the pocket book edition, if puting one of those clear plastic book covers you can get over it, if that could help keep it from flaking, or at least slow it down. Though would be cool to take those pocket editions and have a binder rebind them into something better.

Anyone have any insight on the page number references in the Appendix? I have this exact same set (includding the Hobbit and The Silmarillion Folio) and in the Appendices at the back of Return of The King it says "A few references are given by page to this edition of Lord of the Rings and to the deluxe edition of The Hobbt." Where would these page numbers match up? Would that mean my folio Hobbit or a different version?

Good video. I like the idea of collecting the single volume the way the author intended, but reading and studying the story in 3 volumes plus the prequels.

While reading the Silmarillion, do you think I should read the entire Children of Hurin book instead of the chapter, or save that for later? I don't want to read Children of Hurin before the Silmarillion

The Jemima Caitlin version is beautiful, it was gifted to my child as a present when he was born by my brother in law as he knows how much I love The Hobbit. My Child is now five and we have been enjoying reading it together. It’s everything I wanted to introduce my child into the world of Tolkien and continue our love of reading together as a family. The 80th anniversary facsimile first edition was a first wedding anniversary present from my husband. These are two of my favourite copies of The Hobbit. I grew up reading my Dad’s copy and understandably it is his.

I just received The Hobbit Folio and it is stunning. My Lord Of The Rings Folio set is arriving tomorrow and I can't wait to jump into this world! This will be my first time reading the whole series! When you say the map of Rohan and Gondor isn't there, do you just mean as an actual fold out or it's literally not drawn there? Where would you recommend getting a version of that map that isn't digital? I think I'm going to eventually order the Silmarillion as well, it's such a gorgeous set and Folio Society is incredible!

Having 2 large breed dogs and living in the country, I'm always having to clean my bookshelves. Never knew how much dog hair gets everywhere haha. Cleaning mine tends to be therapeutic and brings the feeling of accomplishment. Now I just need to attempt to read the books I have before buying more 😭😂.

Love your passion and dedication that you bring. As I read the books, I'll have to come back and rewatch this and other videos so I can be more confident with my knowledge of Tolkien's works. Always found the Ringwraiths interesting and pinpointing probable locations as you did would be awesome.

It all depends on how one handles a book. Something like this, a hefty hardback is not ideal for reading as compared to a paperback - but my version is still as good as new despite substantial handling 👍

I have a copy of the Alan Lee version that is picture book size with the whole book on glossy paper. It’s so beautiful, you can see the illustrations in amazing fidelity, and I feel like the hobbit really benefits from that form factor. Will definitely be reading that version to my kids if I ever have them

Sorry, but I'm going to say the 2021 Ted Nasmith Illustrated Deluxe Edition is by far the best Silmarillion ever made. It moved away from the stale all-blue look that's always been used with Silmarillion releases. It has an amazing front cover with Nasmith's art front and center , and an amazing slipcase showcasing the war of the Elves. I've never seen an edition like it in the Silmarillion's entire publishing history, and I feel we wont get something like it again for many decades to come. Also comes packed with some of the greatest art made for the franchise.

Some years ago I've ordered the Lord of the Rings set by the Folio Society, but unfortunately my copies were printed in China and it was a massive disappointment considering the price tag. (which is also a common issues with some Harper Collins editions) Of all my Folio collection these ones are by far the worst. The covers have started to fade, the paper quality is not the best and the print lacks contrast and punch. I can see from your review that yours are printed in Germany (at least the Silmarillion and the LOTR) and they look much better. I'll try to contact them and request a German printed copy of the Silmarillion. cheers

Smith of Wootton Major is so beautiful its become my favourite book ... I have a son and I relate to it, I feel like for me the star represents my sons time coming up and mine slowly passing.. and I love how he makes the beautiful things, I cut/polish gems and make wood carvings for my family so I guess I feel that in my own life and also the star represents psilocybin cubensis...I spent many years enjoying them.....

I’ve been reading from this for the last month and a bit (reached Letter 131 which is ridiculously long 😂). It’s such a delight! It’s got all sorts of fascinating biographical information but, more interestingly, the conversations about life, relationships and faith are a welcome surprise. I also appreciate any recollections of Tolkien’s amusing interactions with Americans lol

I bought the really pretty Special Deluxe Illustrated Edition one with the slipcase. Just finished reading it. No issues with sticking pages, but I've found quite a few pages that seemed to have been printed twice on. Slightly harder to read than normal. I'm not really disappointed but I did pay a good amount for it, and kind of expected perfection. Either way, will use it to read it again.
