I did Hung Gar for about a year way back in the early 90's - a place here in Toronto called "Fist of Mind". I really enjoyed my training there. I eventually got into 7 Star Mantis under Sifu Jon Funk of Vancouver, and that is my favourite of the classic Gung Fu styles - it relates well to Bruce's Jun Fan Gung Fu.

With this combo you have to decide if the body hook or the spinning hook kick will land, otherwise you need to step back after the hook to create space for the kick. Ideally both will land if they back up after the body hook and finish with a kick to the head. Also don’t try and step too far out to the side with the last kick in the combination. Keep up the training.

Its awesome as a sport , for dexterity etc. But isn't this useless in a real life scenario? You wont ever be in a knife fight. And if there is a chance you are going to be in one, you really need to change the neighborhood. This training would be good for special forces / military - but for all other people - well , an awesome sport.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. At Trinity we approach most of this type of material as an exercise in developing coordination and line familiarization. A way to play. The person who taught the drill, Grand Tuhan Leo Gaje, actually did teach military and law enforcement. We may also have not done the best presentation as we are just going through notes from a seminar. I certainly agree that most people in North America are not going to be involved in a large double blade duel of any sort.

How does it work when your agressor is as fast as you? Because I don't see myself being able to use 3 distinct movements each time my aggressor thrusts the knife at me. Also, how do I deal with mistakes? How long until I no longer mistakes, and I mean none. Because I don't want that one in a thousand chance of making a mistake to cause me my life. Also, at 2:09, instead of using both hands to block that single thrust, isn't one enough and why not just use the other hand to stab the drilling partner?
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD

Hi, thanks for taking the time comment. This is a clip from our video notes after attending a seminar with Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje back in 2007. I don't really have an answer for your questions on the drill. But as to being perfect and not making mistakes - I don't think that can ever happen. The Dog Brothers talk about the idea of "Dying Less Often". Training doesn't give a guarantee, but can improve your percentage chance of surviving. How much depends on how much training you do. How much training for a knife encounter is enough? As much as you can, reflected by how likely you think it is to happen to you.

This is interesting! Is this to practice using those sticks for self-defense, or what purpose do they serve?
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD 3 ай бұрын
The sticks are a part of the larger Filipino martial art of Kali. They have a self-defense aspect, as training with them makes you more familiar with how weapons are used against you, but most people will never be in a stick on stick (or large blade on large blade) confrontation. In this case the stick helps to make a footwork drill more interesting.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. The hook, in this combination, is being thrown to hide the change in foot position and transition from punching range to the Savate kicking range. It isn't meant to be a damaging or even scoring shot, it is a distraction. You can't use the shin in Savate and must use the shoe. This requires a different range than many other arts / systems, and requires the Savateur to be proficient in deceptive range changes.

@@toronto_Savate-and-JKD . That's only because I myself have become old, fat and overweight, and I hate it. But regardless the late professor Aslii was so good because in his youth, he dedicated so much time to physical conditioning. And I believe despite of age, that this could also be accomplished again. Calisthenics and weight training is the key, and old supplements also, hormone replacement therapy is such a thing and we all should be demanding it!

Early Savate (Chausson) actually did have a technique using the hand as a base to kick from, like its Afro-Brazilian cousin Capoeira. In fact there was an article published in a June 1987 Black Belt magazine about the various possible origins of Savate. It featured the late Professor Daniel Duby and JKD instructor Paul Vunak demonstrating Boxe Française Savate techniques. It may have been influenced by European, Asian and African fighting arts. This is a beautiful video!

This is pretty bad. You're trying to do Espada y Daga techniques and you're conflating it with grappling and disarms. Not the right thing to do. Espada y Daga is typically striking and stabbing only and adding grappling with 'disarms' are unrealistic and won't happen in real life. Where did you get your training for this? It's very confused.
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Sometimes the stick is just a stick. I'm not confused. This is pretty standard material from the Inosanto Lacoste blend system. I'm also not particularly concerned with being "unrealistic" as we practice these drills for coordination and fun - where we live real life doesn't include stick & dagger or sword & dagger confrontations.

If you do these with bladed weapons you cut yourself severly o 0 I mean you disarm the other person while disarming yourself. Works wonders with sticks tho seemingly. If the technique banks on you running your whole arm up and down a bladed weapon its not a feasible one. How would you make sure the edge isnt aligned and how would the other person not try to align his edge while you rub your arm against it? 😅 And whats up with the weird flourishy waddling of the sticks prior to stabbing the other one? 😂 Are you supposed to you know look cool before stabbing your attacker? Giving him time to kick you in the balls and then the noggins pucking up his bladed weapon and stab you with it? Or what are the flourishes for?
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD 7 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. The title of the video is "STICK & Knife" so, though the stick often represents a blade it is also sometimes just a stick. If you give me a time reference for the "flourishy waddling" I'll try to answer. We practice these drills for coordination and fun more than anything.
@iwanadai3065
@iwanadai3065 7 ай бұрын
flourishes are used in anyo but for this case those movements were strikes, they didn’t make contact and weren’t full force cause they don’t need to be for a demonstration/drill. and side note, flourishes do look cool but are sometimes also functional in kali. in a sport/art/combat system that focuses on armed stick combat, flourishes can be effective for defense by making areas not worth hitting by adding the risk of getting hit and also for distancing which can be seen in a wide variety of media that utilizes knife combat

@agreat8745
@agreat8745 7 ай бұрын
@@toronto_Savate-and-JKD The material presented is completely impractical, and would absolutely never work without a willing training partner just standing there, letting Scott first hit him, and then choke him. Skilled fighters don't throw jabs flat footed, and then leave the jab fully extended for their adversary to block, then parry, and then strike, and then choke. Completely unrealistic demonstration. Unskilled, raging adversaries throw wild haymakers and are completely unpredictable. There is no way Scott's technique does anything effective in this situation either. Practical and highly functional would be keeping distance so neither skilled nor unskilled opponent is able to hit Scott. Give the training partner a pair of 16 oz boxing gloves and tell him to take Scott's head off and don't hold back... let's see Scott perform under those conditions.
@toronto_Savate-and-JKD

@@agreat8745 Let me start by thanking you for taking the time to give a detailed reply. Now, there is a difference between "fighting", "sparring", and "drilling". What is going on in this video is not the first two - where your comments would have more validity. This isn't even drilling, this is just walking through the material, after having seen it presented once, just so that we could record it. Scott is a highly trained tactical officer with a huge background in martial arts, who has likely had more real world experience than most people. He has also competed as part of team Canada in the Savate World Championships, and has sparred and grappled with resisting opponents. This just isn't that.
