One of my very favorite artists. His work is exquisite and joyful in a style of watercolor all his own. You can recognize his work immediately, a sign of great artists. Thank you for this video!

As much as I admire the work of Joseph Raffael and the artist himself, I feel heartbroken having just learned he worked so directly to duplicate photographs that he projected his photographs onto his surfaces, tracing the shapes. I have drawn and painted my own imagery from my own eyes for 45 years now professionally. Now I understand that my works are slower than so many other artists who are simply copying and tracing photographs. For example Kehinde Wiley has his photo guides printed on to the canvases to be painted.

Hi Joseph, was thinking about a book I saw in the library of CCAC (Oakland 83). A sea lions face and a limited palette. Other pages with bamboo and marsh scenes and they stuck with me. Very cool. Great to see you working here.

I LOVE watching this video! I've watched it many many times! What are you using around the 2 minute mark? It looks like you are erasing but I don't see any pencil lines or masking fluid? Also, what kind of watercolor sticks are your favorite? Please post more videos! I was in NYC in February and actually got to see many of your works in person at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery! Truly amazing!

I visited New York City and Strand's bookstore last year and they had a display copy of the book, which I browsed through. It was love at first sight! Unfortunately, the copy on display was the only copy of the book they had left and it was not in the best shape. So I left without buying the book. Gorgeous book nonetheless.

I enjoyed your book tour very much. I also am an American living in France. My husband and I have been here since 2001 non stop. We live in Correze not far from where Tulle where President Hollande was our Council general for many years. More cows than people and very quiet. I had discovered you in the Artist's Magazine a few years ago and I have been been interested in your works and techniques ever since. I have only seen your paintings on line or in magazines. I would love to see one face to face. I am also a water color painter. I was wondering how you can paint so big. Do you frame your paintings in glass or are they varnished? I see them being so big but I can't imagine how you do that. Thanks for sharing your works, they are very alive and brilliant. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016! Best wishes, Vicki

+Vicki Daum thanks Vicki i wish you and your husband continued well-being in France isn't water color wonderful? no i don't varnish the ptgs hey are framed in a special plexi-glass re: your Q of how they are ptd so big------the answer can be found by looking at the other recent video on you tube Moving Toward The Light--the book all best always, and thanks again joseph

+Joseph Raffael Thanks Joseph for your prompt reply. I do love water color. I am hoping to have a web site up and running this coming year. Some paintings that I do come from my dreams. I enjoy painting faces. We have so many interesting subjects here in France. I never really thought of the sections the paintings as abstracts. That makes so much sense! Sometimes I am working along on a painting and it all seems so disconnected. Looking at the abstract sense of the painting makes "sense"! Thanks also for your well wishes. The weather here has been incredible. Hope you and your wife enjoy today. William is alive because of the French. He suffered a heart attack in August. I had taken him to the hospital emergency the night before with severe back pains, they kept him overnight, did tests all night and in the morning did a scan. After the scan his heart stopped and the nurse immediately called for CPR. His heart had stopped for 10 minutes. They rushed him to Clermont-Ferrand about 45 miles, where the CHU implanted a stent in his artery. He was in an induced coma and they told me he may not wake up. Well, he did and he is slowly getting his strength back. He spent almost 3 months in the hospital. That would have been impossible in the States. We are very grateful and privileged to live in such a beautiful and caring country. We live in a very small hamlet if he had been at home I'm sure he would not be here today. Have a nice painting day, Vicki

Joseph, Thank you so much for sharing a bit of how you make your magic. I too, have been a fan for many years, and have recently been grappling with watercolor again. What a maddening medium! I think you use it better than any other contemporary painter I know. All the best to you. May you paint in good health for many more years. You are an inspiration for us.

Mr. Raffael - I love your watercolors. Your work inspires me beyond words. I saw a show of yours many years ago when the Nancy Hoffman Gallery was still located in Soho. It knocked me out. It was the first time I viewed your work directly. I was very touched and influenced by the experience. I have a question: Being your pieces are so large - What weight watercolor paper do you use and do you soak the paper before painting? Thanks in advance. Be well.
@josephraffael-official10 жыл бұрын
hi Al, very kind your words are! ahh i wish i could give you an answer the paper is Fabriano Artistico i a roll 55 inches high and i've never gotten the hang of which is which ---- cold press or hot press but i use the smooth kind :-) no, i do not soak the paper before ptg i like the wet on the dry and to allow the puddling to surprise me when it dries i wish you great pleasure with your work thanks for your encouragement joseph write to my website i would like to add you to my ML be well
