What I love about BP in this role is you can really see her as the mother of Baby June

I know a lot of people don’t agree with this but Bernadette is by far my favorite Rose!! I appreciate all the other greats such as Merman, LuPone, and Lansbury, but Bernadette really made this role her own and played into her strengths and I love seeing a more softer and witty approach to the character!!!!

SHE IS THE BEST ROSE. Merman bitch can go belt somewhere else

I always say that Bernadettes 2003 production is when they actually went into a different direction and I could actually see the human in Rose where as every other production just doesn’t do that. 21 years later they are trying something new with Audra McDonald. They are taking an actress who like Bernadette is an accomplished actress but doesn’t fit into what they think Mama Rose should be. ❤️❤️

I think singing ability is subservient to acting ability in this show and in my view the acting chops of Imelda Staunton, especially in this number, far exceeds the acting ability of Bernadette Peters. (Imelda played Mama Rose at the Savoy in London in 2015. He played it bitter as hell.)

3:44 i know she was sick but the gutteral sound when she said "Why did I do it?" Is giving chills. She really does sound like she's losing it!

She sounds simply amazing and I’ve seen different actors sing this song. By far this performance resonated with me the most though the others executed wonderfully. While yes she’s under the weather but I think that only adds layers to this performance. She was quite literally sick over her children “all this work and what did it get me… why did I do it!” The pain the anger the confusion is displayed impeccably by THEE Bernadette. My first introduction to her was Cinderella (I’m a younger millennial) as an adult now, I’ve been able to fall in love with how BRILLIANT of a singer and performer she is. Lived her guest spot in will and grace too. Lol

I love Bernadette Peters! I will say, this version of the song seemed to really drag? Tempo-wise, I mean. I don't know if they slowed it down intentionally to give her more time to breathe (because she was sick), or if it was a creative direction this production took (I've never seen this particular cast do this play before), or if the orchestra was really unfamiliar with the piece and trying to keep up, or what! The whole song just felt a little too slow, to me-- but I didn't see anyone else mention it! And Bernadette is a great actress, who sells the emotion and complexity required for Rose's character exceptionally well, so that doesn't hurt! :) Still a great watch.

They shouldn’t have butchered the song in the first part. It ruined the flow and balance-it was written as it was for a reason! Truly ill-advised on the part of the musical arranger.

Here she is, boys! Here she is, world! Here's Rose! Curtain up! Light the lights! Play it, boys! Ya either got it, or ya ain't. And, boys, I got it! Ya like it? Well, I got it! Mama's doin' fine. Mama's gettin' hot. Mama's goin' stong. Mama's movin' on. Mama's all alone. Mama doesn't care. Mama's lettin' loose. Mama's got the stuff. Mama's lettin' go. Mama? I love how the hoity toities are like, "She was clearly sick..." Ummm this was a great performance. I didnt discover she was sick until I read the comments. You people play like you're in the know when you're just trying to seem superior by having "insider" info. She was great. Period. Sure, she wasn't always resonant... But that's not what performance is all about. You knew what she was singing about despite her not being technically perfect, by the pickiest of criteria. She wasn't in voice studio, she was Mama Rose.

Simply astonishing. I was lucky enough to see her performance on Broadway, and like this Tony performance, her take of this classic is heartbreakingly simply perfection… the emotional range she brought to that show blew me away, and simply watching this clip, brought it all back, and right now I am a teary eyed emotional wreck… wow, bravo

Pretty much saw every “Rose.” I know people have their favorites but for me Peters was the best. Hands down. She got the comedy and was driven by the pain. Stayed in the moment flawlessly (sadly, for me, not found in her Dolly). Her Rose was tied for the top Five performances I’ve seen in my life. I give her all the praise for definitive character.

Even through the ups and down of vocal availability, the iron will with which Idina performed held solid unto the very end.

Oof. Idina REALLY struggled through that. At times it was like she wasn't even trying to sing, but rather speak it. It's sad that this is the Tony performance we got. Imagine if the producers had let SJB take on the role.

I love Bernadette Peters; I was pre-flighting an entertainment system on an aircraft once while they were pre-boarding. I looked up from the VCR and saw this beautiful woman and blurted out, "You look exactly like Bernadette Peters" Without skipping a beat, she flashed me a gracious smile, and purred; "What a coincidence . . . I am Bernadette Peters" I tried to contain myself, but started laughing, she gave a sparklie eyed wink and with a chuckle took her seat in first class. I mumbled, "I love your work" and nervously finished my work on the VCR. She was gracious and kind during the stress of traveling - I walked on a cloud for the rest of the day.
