More people there now, but absolutely worth it! :-) I was there in 1982, 16 years old. My buddy (17) and I convinced our parents that a chartered ski trip to Chamonix at our age was totally safe. We paid for it ourselves so all they had to do was trust us and say yes. We live in Norway, parents were gullible then. We hired a great guide for the whole day for Vallee Blanche, but since there was still time on the clock (and I guess he liked us and wanted to ski there anyway), when we got down he took us to Brévent on the other side of town. On the way up he pointed to a gondola in the snow below and said "the French buy used wires from Italy when they are done with them. Not all gondolas get it to the top". He had a mind of his own, and where he brought us was just awesome and off the trail. We had to travers and climb a bit before we came to the top of a chute we dropped in to and that felt vertical, about 3 to 8 meters wide the first 100-200 meters before widening out to be a little used great slope back to Chamonix. I'm guessing only guides knew about this then.

@millstrandintegratedschool90344 жыл бұрын
Thanks ;) I've no doubt there will be a few mistakes along the way, it's a struggle sometimes remembering everything a few months later. The biggest mistake I made that week was on the slopes and only discovered by me at the end of the Vallée Blanche run... I had skied it with all the top buckles of my boots undone! Little wonder I felt and skied at times like a total beginner. I agree though.... Chamonix is a very very special place all year round.

@@millstrandintegratedschool9034 My english is not as good as i wish . I think this is a misunderstanding - Sorry. You made one of the best videos from Chamonix. I mean in my post: if you are skiing on one of the slopes in Grand Montets, you can make one error , maybe two in serie, by the third you are going very fast towards the rescue team. Generally Chamonix slopes, and specially Grand Montets are not forgiving you very many errors. The wind indicator in yours ears is accelerating dangerous fast with each error. Aaaand: This year it could be our next chamonix trip. What a mess.

In my time, 1991, no cabel car to this 2000 m Station, just a very,very scary ordinary seat lift. That may explain why so few people there at that time .. Still, I claim I made some 20 runs from 2500m and down to 2000, during easter saturday 1991 and will remember this with great, great joy for the rest of my life! Straight on the cable car lift up to 2500m again after each run, no queue whatsoever! The feeling when you came back on the front side of Brevent, over the crest, facing Mont Blanc, at some 2400m, simply amazing! Highly recommended!

The guides rope their groups and provide some crampons for those who don't have them. The ropes anchored into the arete is there during the ski season. Yes, you can descend in boots without crampons... up to you.

The safety ropes are provided by guides that you book and pay for. The fixed rope is there for everyone, paying or not. Crampons are not essential by advisable.

Hi. Do you think it is necessary to make the trip with a guide? It looks like just following the frequently used track. The problem with the guide is always the fixed datum and unpredictable weather for just this day.
@BigFluter7 жыл бұрын
Hi TenDee... it’s entirely up to you. Yes you could do it without a guide. The tracks are relatively easy to follow in good visibility. The high mountain guides are pretty fantastic, experienced, skilled and highly trained individuals though. The issue arises when visibility is not good, when the tracks aren’t just as clear and when sections of the snowpack are unstable or unpredictable weather.... we don’t carry transceivers just for the fun of it. As someone working towards IML status I always err on the safe side. Next time I do it I just have to remember to clip up my ski boots!!!! Unknowingly skiing with unclipped boots is made my descent a nightmare. 😥

@@BigFluter hi Philip! I am thinking of doing this black run in the next day or 2. I am in Chamonix. I am intermediate, blue runs fine, red runs so far are difficult. Will this be too steep for me? ? Is it particularly dangerous? Your ski ing makes the run look very controlled. I easily managed the Voiz crushing blue run yesterday (mentioned in this video).

Philip, may I ask what song is used on this video from around 4m30 onward?

Apologies... from memory it was a track downloaded from an on-line source for royalty free music. There is a chance the folder of music is still on my old Mac. I'll try and find it and post the track title if its there. Finding the right piece of music for a clip is probably the most challenging part of any edit.

I got the bus from CHAMONIX SUD bus station on Avenue de Courmayeur at around 8.30am. There was a later bus an hour later. If memory serves correctly I bought the ticket at the station on the morning but at very busy times you're advised to buy it in advance. About 20 Euros return. You get off at the ENTRÈVES Funivia Skyway near the Mt Blanc lift and then walk down to the Val Veny lift. (You dont actually go to Couymayeur town). Then there's just the small matter of being back in time for the return bus at around 4.15pm.

Sam Davidson Thanks for the feedback.... I'm always sourcing videos when trying to decide where to ski next so am simply trying to return the favour.. Chamonix is a very special place and I've come to love it dearly.... Summer and Winter. I invested in a GoPro Hero4 Black before embarking on the Haute Route in the Summer of 2014. It's still going strong. The helmet attachment helps maintain reasonable stability.

Hi Robert Thanks for the positive feedback. The last two years in the Alps have been food for the soul and returning this Winter to ski the Valleé Blanche and Chamonix Inc Le Tour literally put the icing on the cake. I'm hoping to complete my IML to have an excuse to return but will undoubtedly return anyway.... There are a lot of other treks to complete first. As I completed both the Haute Route and TMB solo and camping (some of the time) I scoured the Internet to find videos to help me prepare. I was grateful for the help and put these together to try in some small way to repay the favour.
