I bought an animation cel that had the sketch behind it but the paint was fused with it and I couldn't put a nicer image behind Kuwabara. 😭 Currently, my cel is sitting in the envelope it came in between my drawers so I want to put it away nicely.

Hi ! I don’t understand why you need to keep your cell in an another bag that you cut on the corner and not directly in your acid free portfolio Itoya ? It should breath better no than 2 bags ?Thanks !

They should be acid free as well. You don't want oxidation, but you do want it to release it's gas. I think its more of a safety measure for vinegar syndrome to help prevent spreading

literally the only video on youtube that shows the proper process for storing cels. Thank you so much! I Have also found that if you have the larger binder, it helps to store the binder on the side if possible (Ring side up) making sure the pages don't touch the surface only the binder ends touching the storage surface. The page inserts hang freely on the rings and it also keeps the weight off each page, eliminating the stacking effect which can damage cels. Another benefit is the binder can get the proper air circulation it needs throughout storing, keeping the pages fresh longer. The acid free inserts are vital for keeping the fumes from eating the cels alive. Just make sure you don't make the stupid mistake that was mentioned in the video. I place mine in the larger insert where I also place the acid free magazine bags containing only the cel. There's usually enough room for the background as well. Nothing besides the cel should be in the magazine bag. Also, make time once a year to "air out" your cels for about 24 hours to vent the buildup of fumes. You will thank yourself years later when you can pass these works of art down to your future generations!

Yes and no. Sketches / Drawings are safe from gassing themselves out. That's why when I buy a cel I usually only buy it if it has the original sketch with it. If the cel dies, then at least I still have the original drawing. Drawings you just need to keep out of sunlight and places with bad humidity. They are a lot easier to take care of!

Super helpful video! I got my first cel 2 years ago and it came framed and has been framed since then I’m kind of scared to do anything to it or take it out of the framing. Do you have any advice? Or are you possibly on Reddit where I could pm you a picture of it? Any advice would be appreciated! I have other cels I want to frame as well, I know it’s not best for them but it really would make me happy to be able to look at them everyday. Any more tips on how to properly frame them would be so appreciated. Thanks for any and all help!

It doesn't hurt to open up the framed one you got and check the condition. It could be stuck in the frame from decay, try gently moving it. Smell it to see if there is any acidic smell. It sort of depends on if it may have been getting a lot of direct sunlight. If everything looks good from there though, the frame is probably okay. I don't have another other suggestions than what is already in my video. Best of luck collecting!

I'm going to be honest. I have a history degree where I took courses to become certified in museum curation. Their prices are inflated for profit (which is fine.) But you could literally do make your own or buy cheaper components that do the same thing. If you're too lazy and have the money to pay for their frames - go crazy.

Hi Nick! Thank you so much for the video. Am I wrong to asume that cels made during the late 90s are actually some kind of inocuous plastic like Polypropilene or something like that? Thank you so much for your comment! I wanted to make a video about this because at the time when you searched up cels / framing etc, a lot of people were not getting were missing super important information in their videos. A lot of people advocate for slapping them in a frame without explaining the safety of how and where to put them so they don't burn up. I really hate seeing new collectors learn their lesson the hard way by losing a one of a kind cel from some show that meant a lot to them.

I don't like them for cels, they're tighter than regular frames. I like having a bit of the extra space in a regular frame for the cel to breath. If you're only framing a genga / sletch a magnetic frame isn't bad though.

There is a company in Japan that boasts about how they can undue vinegar syndrome but as far as I know it is very expensive. The best thing you can do is put the cel with vinegar syndrome away in a different place than your other cels so they don't get messed up too. www.celoasis.com/index.php/home/vinegar-syndrome/vinegar-syndrome-treatment/ this is one of the places you can get in contact with to try it if you're really attached to that one cel, but as a disclaimer I've never tried it so I have no idea if it is true or not.

Cel -> In an acid free magazine bag (bag that is cut open to let it breath)-> in an Itoya folder sleeve - > Microchamber in the Itoya folder behind the Cel that is in a bag but it should NOT be making direct contact with the cel. Again, the microchamber paper is just to help absorb mold and the chemicals of the decaying cel. They're not necessary though.

I usually slit two sides completely open. But they should fit anyway.

How often do you change the sleeves of the cel? Also if you were to frame the cel, would you bag it and add the micro chamber paper?
@nickva4588
@nickva4588 3 жыл бұрын
You should change the sleeves for the cel once a year, or smell to see if it is starting to develop vinegar syndrome. I would not bag a cel in a frame because I feel that would make it not be able to breathe inside of the frame. However, cutting up the microchamber paper into small pieces and putting them into the frame to absorb mold would definitely work.

Great content. Would you have any recommendations when it comes to sellers? I’m trying to avoid illegitimate items.
@nickva4588
@nickva4588 3 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of great sellers you can find through collector communities like Rubberslug, Reddit, and other various sites. You can trade cels or buy from avid collectors who will give you good deals when they're done collecting cels and want to get rid of them (But make sure they go to a true fan). Some websites that are legit are like asylum-anime.com, Seansanime, Anime-link, Takamura store, and a few more. Ebay and other auction sites can be risky. If a cel looks too good and is too fairly priced - no faded or chipped paint, then it is likely fake. Always make sure it has the peg-hole in the middle of the top, if it has no peg holes in the top or bottom then it is almost always fake. Anime from japan the peg holes are usually on the top. While American cartoons put the peg holes on the bottom.

@@nickva4588 I’ve observed it’s a subject of contention for some sellers when it comes to getting information about where a piece came from. No disrespect meant. I’ll continue doing research. @nickva4588 3 жыл бұрын
@@woodspringstcg No problem! I know many collectors don't like to share where they get them because they like to 'hoard' them per say. I'm kind of new to the scene so I really don't care to hoard I'd rather share. The BEST place to buy is Yahoo Auctions Japan, but the reason I didn't say that is because currently Japan is not shipping to the US due to Covid, AND you have to use a proxy service like Buyee which tacks on extra fees. So right now it is really not worth it to order from Japan right now even though they have the best market for Anime cels. (Even American cartoons because the hobby is bigger there.)

The picture frame I'm using in this video is 11 x 14 inch frame, but sometimes you'll need to measure a cel because you could unexpectedly get an 'oversized' or 'pan' cel that is slightly bigger for effect. Other than that, if it is normal size, look for a 11 x 14 that has an acid free mat cutout on the inside of the frame that doesn't let the cel rest on the glass like the only I show in the video at 12:40 seconds.

@nickva4588 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately if the drawing is stuck, it is usually stuck for good. Really skilled people with a lot of patience can sometimes peel them off with success, but I don't see the value in the risk since sometimes when you peel off the drawing it will take a lot of paint off of the cel sometimes completely ruining it. Hope this helps!
