Hi! Thank you for watching! Sorry to hear that you plant is struggling :( Bird of Paradise leaves folding up can be caused by a few factors: - Underwatering: If the plant isn't getting enough water, its leaves may fold to conserve moisture. - Overwatering: Excess water can lead to root rot, which prevents the plant from absorbing oxygen and nutrients properly. This stress on the root system can cause the leaves to fold or wilt. - Low Humidity: Bird of Paradise plants thrive in humid environments, and low humidity can cause the leaves to fold. - Too Much Direct Sunlight: Excessive exposure to direct sunlight may lead to stress, causing the leaves to fold up. - Temperature Stress: Cold temperatures or drafts can cause leaves to curl or fold. - Lack of Nutrients: If the plant is not receiving enough nutrients, the leaves may fold or droop as a sign of nutrient deficiency. - Pest Issues: Pests like spider mites can cause stress to the plant, leading to folding leaves. Hope this will help to determine the cause. Green Cheers and May your plant recover and thrive!

This plant gets rooted so easily, you can just skip the water part and go straight to soil.

Hi! Thank you for your comment. Yes, you may propagate Tradescantia plants in soil. I prefer the water propagation method so I can see how the roots are developing:) Green Cheers!

Hi! The ZZ should dry out all the way down so it makes sense to insert it deep but what if the plant recommendation is for it to dry 1 in, like epipremnum. Won't that mean I should insert the tool just around 1-2 inches and water when this shows dry even when deeper in the pot it may still be moist?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 5 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching. For any plant type, test the soil as deep as possible without hitting the bottom of the pot. Water your Pothos plants when the meter reading is between 1-3. You may find a moisture soil chart for the most common indoor plants in our blog post here: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-use-soil-moisture-meter/ Green Cheers!

your advice is not accurate. I have a dracaena And it has one of the most extensive root systems of any of my house plants. The reason those plants in your video do not have many roots is because they’ve been recently propagated. Either you do not have any experience with long-term care or you do not have enough faith in your viewers to keep a plant long-term
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 12 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for sharing your insights. It’s true that younger plants have less extensive root systems compared to their mature counterparts. As they grow, their roots will expand, which often leads to larger/longer stems and heavier heads, making them prone to leaning. Proper size pot, regular pruning can help balance the plant and ensure the root system supports the plant adequately. Green Cheers!

Thank you for sharing tips on supporting large leaves. I have a tall BOP, but it's just a single thick stem with only 6 leaves. Is there any way I can I can get this plant to grow "babies" or can I cut the single large stem to divide to grow new plants?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 12 күн бұрын
Hi! If a large Bird of Paradise has a single root system, you can still attempt to divide it, but it requires careful handling to avoid damaging/killing the plant. If you’re unsure about the process, it might be best to hire a professional or experienced gardener to do it for you. Green Cheers!

When adding water to the selfwateringreservoir untill the indicator is at highest point, wont the roots be wet all the time and exposed to rootrot?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 12 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching! To avoid any issue, do not refill the reservoir as soon as the water level indicator is down to min. Allow the soil to dry before refilling the reservoir. How dry the soil should be depends on a plant type you have. Best to use the soil moisture meter for establishing a proper watering frequency. Here is our video about how to use this tool + the soil meter chart for the most common plants: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-use-soil-moisture-meter/ Green Cheers!

NEVER pot up 5-6” inches. That’s far too big. You only want to pot up in size 1-2” inches bigger around in diameter and 1-3” inches in depth. Again refer to the rootballs size and the amount of roots. You will end up with root rot in you add more than 2” inches of soil in all directions for a plant. Especially the plant she’s using for an example. It doesn’t need much water. Excess soil without chunks like what she’s using will hold far too much excess water. This particular plant also doesn’t like self watering plant pots. Sad to see her give misinformation like this.
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 12 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for sharing your perspective. For the past 13 years, we have successfully potted ZZ plants in self-watering planters and all have are thriving. ZZ plant roots are not particularly slow-growing and can handle a 5" larger pot size. Proper water amount and frequency that what keeps plants roots healthy and rot free. Green Cheers!

In my experience it very much depends on how much light a zz plant is getting. If you use free draining soil and let the soil dry out completely between watering, and the plant is getting enough light, the plant will cope with the extra soil. People get so precious about them, and I get that they are expensive to buy initially, but in my experience they are actually quite resilient and hardy. This pot is by no means too big for this plant. I do think the old pot could have been saved though, by leaning the plant on it's side and easing it out of the pot sideways. Although that may have involved a discussion with the client, that they'd rather cut the pot in this case.
