I know someone who can fix the electronics (the circuit boards) on these. Otherwise they cannot be repaired.

Hi! How do you fix a bobbin that isn't catching with the top thread? I think my hook is out of sync with the needle? I'm trying to get into the upper part of the machine but the screws are covered with plastic. Thank you!

@@birgithilary there’s nothing up top that concerns this issue. Make sure your needle is installed properly (flat side to the rear) and that it isn’t bent. That’s almost always the cure. You can check your machine timing by watching the point on the hook as it passes above the eye of the needle after the needle has descended and is rising a couple millimeters.

This is one I don't have yet! I'm looking for a REALLY clean Redeye, so one will turn up eventually. ALSO: Chrome wasn't in real wide use until about 1925. Shiny metal before then is almost always nickel. Good news is, nickel is DEAD easy to deplate and replate. Literally, plug a wall charger in and suspend your part in a plastic tank full of solution.

I throw around terms like chrome and nickel plating almost interchangeably, because my gist is not about historical accuracy of processes, but just getting my point across to people who couldn’t care less what year the processes began. In the future I will use accurate phrases like “shiny stuff” and “highly reflective materials”. I’m glad to know that there are highly knowledgeable folks out there keeping me in line and not allowing the rampant and careless postulating of incorrect information.

I have one from 1917 and it sews great. The decals on the bed are badly worn but the rest of them are pretty good. I'm still debating whether to give it a new finish or just enjoy the 107-year-old patina. I gave it a hand crank and will put it on display just for kicks. What you show here is something special.

@@engelbob8402 I vote to leave it like it is. Its condition tells its story of hard use and survival. It’s like grey hair and wrinkles on an old warrior, they illustrate its character. In the meanwhile, you can look for one like this to place beside it and admire the contrast.

A true museum piece. Gorgeous machine. Personally, I prefer the class 66 bobbin to anything else. I'm sure that baby is worth a pretty penny. Beautiful decals. Most definitely NOT a doorstop or anchor!

You're so right. This has always been my favorite machine. The stretch stitch one is the same thing except it doesn't have those few extra stitch settings. Can't live without them. I have a few of them because I do a lot of sewing and it's quicker to have the thread colors set up and ready to go. Also when one is out for service I have backup and don't have to worry about what stitch setting I'm going to use.

I been wanting to learn how to sow for a while and I finally got my sowing machine just to find out it’s one of the hardest ones for a beginner 😂 but I do have a question, dose the quality of the thread matter? I got mine from Walgreens and every time I try to thread it brakes. I don’t know if it’s because I’m doing something wrong or because it’s bad quality..

I also got the same exact Bernina 850 industrie sewing machine with the giant clutch motor pedal 😁 (classy!). It runs very smooth and VERY FAST! But I'm completely confused on setting it up. Can you do a short video on running the thread and winding a bobbin/straight stitching a little bit? I don't even know how to wind the bobbin on this, but luckily I have a bucket of extra bobbins and parts. I noticed that nylon gear on the bottom of yours is exposed but mine has a shield over it. That's probably of little consequence, but if you want to see some pictures of mine I would be happy to share. I really need a manual for it but the "Bernina 850 L serger" absolutely dominates search results.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 thanks. Sadly in my effort to get it working I broke one of the nylon gears that drives the bobbin. It jammed up under the needle and the needle ended up breaking on the bobbin case once the timing went kaput. 😞 I'll see what my options to machine a gear are... Maybe it can just be flipped around and then I can carefully try and figure out how the teeth went together to correct the timing. This is just too hard without a manual. It's disappointing that Bernina doesn't make all of their manuals available for free online. That's a very basic requirement to manufacturing quality machines and it costs the manufacturer almost nothing to do.

@@iantherealg sorry to hear that. The manufacturing process has become a tournament of lousiness. They are competing for the title of “King Cheapo”. It’s not about you. It’s about them. It’s exactly the opposite of what it was 50 years ago. They don’t want their products to last for generations. They want them to break at the end of warranty coverage, hoping you’ll buy another one. One word sums it up : PLASTIC They win, we lose.

It has been a few months since I bought my first Sears Kenmore 158 machine. Well, I liked it so much, I was able to pick up two more in great condition. The second one looked like it wasn't ever used, it also came with accessories and the manual, and it was the exact same model as the first, it runs amazing. Last week I saw someone had one for sale in my area at an estate sale for $100, great condition with attachments and manual. I oiled it up and it works great too. I am set forever. LOL

Question, I have the same make and model. However, the needle position dial is different? It doesn't offer the left or right needle positions. The manual says it does and pictures the same dial you have on your machine. My dial just gives "M" and steps 1 and 2 for the bottonhole stitch. Do you have any thoughts on why that is? Can it be changed?

Hi! I just had to tell you. I've been watching your videos religously. After viewing this one. I went hunting for a Kenmore 158-10300. I found one on eBay that has hardly been used (if ever). It works perfectly, and is in outstanding condition. Came with everything that was originally included when new. I only paid $100 for it, and am now a grinning fool.

I've got an 1803 with a non-working reverse lever. It feels like it is gummed up. Can I fix this myself, or will I have to have it serviced?

@@deborahpead4060 you need to set your stitch length to it’s longest setting. Take the top off and use your flashlight to observe the mechanism located behind the stitch length dial. Oil that assembly as you cycle the reverse mechanism. You can do that while the machine is running, to speed up the process. (make sure the machine is unthreaded when you run it)

My family (technically my mom, but we share) has this machine. Bobbin cover held on with masking tape, the little thing next to the bobbin winder missing, and the thread held on with a bolt from the basement that just so happens to fit where the spindle came off 😅 Good luck convincing her to take it to a repair shop, though!

@@simplygigi. high shank is : wait for it, HIGH SHANK. There may be an occasional weird high shank that doesn’t line up, but that would be a cheap knock off probably. If you can find any of the old originals, they are made to a higher standard than the cheapos for sure. I would buy an old one and shine it up. If you see a new high shank in a picture, it could possibly be for an industrial machine. They look similar, but aren’t the same. That may be what the other source was referencing. 😎👍🏼

@@143fizzy it will perform as well as any household sewing machine on denim. It will be limited by the size of thread, just like any household sewing machine. If you use a strong polyester thread thats not oversized, this machine will do well on denim, if it’s not too thick. Every machine has its limitations, and denim will help you find its limitations very quickly.

@@candyaustin2052 it will need to be oiled and cycled until it starts working. It’s not uncommon for that to happen if the machine has been inactive for a while.

@@candyaustin2052 just take your extended spout oiler and put a drop of oil on any assembly that pivots, hinges, rotates, or slides. Don’t oil the motor, belts, or around the tension assembly. Everything else can use a drop of oil to start moving properly. Get a small flashlight to see where you want to oil. Taking the top off, or flipping it up, will help considerably. Open the side cover on the left side to assist with access as well.

@@MRrwmac a serger trims the edge of a seam and sews a stitch that keeps it from unraveling. Almost every garment that is made from woven or knit fabric has the seams serged. The Sewmobile was retired a year ago. I had to do all the maintenance on it myself, as it was too big and heavy for anyone to work on. I sold it to the Nissan dealer for very close to what i paid for it new. I now have a new Toyota Tacoma that works just fine. I hope you are doing well also.

Hey, RYSSM, I'm a big fan. I'm tickled that you appreciate the Kenmore 158, which was a graduation gift and has served me fifty years. Recently I found the bobbin release wheel doesn't turn. If I snap the holder up to the bobbin, both the sewing arm and the bobbin will spin. I may have caused the situation when oiling but can't outsmart it. Many thanks for your thoughts.

@@familyrobinson7442 i would love to help, but we have to get our names of parts on the same page. Is the bobbin release wheel the same as the hand wheel release knob? Is the sewing arm the same as the hand wheel ? If the hand wheel release knob wont turn, it needs to be loosened by removing the set screw and putting a soft cloth around it and use channel locks to break it loose. I have a video on reassembly.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Yes, you translated my amateur terminology well. We are talking about the same release knob, and the "sewing arm" moves with the hand wheel, so those are the same. I found and looking at your kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5jOhGSlj56Xhdk to re-assemble the hand wheel. I can remove the screw, cushion the wheel, and hold with pliers to break it loose. To gauge how much force to apply, am I breaking free of rust? After I strong-arm it loose, does something need better maintenance/oil/handling?

@@familyrobinson7442 probably no rust on the plated parts. The clutch disc bites into the knob pretty well, it has to be muscled a bit to break it loose. Oil it and reassemble it, and it’s ready to go.

I have several vintage Pfaff machines, as well as the 7570, and like anything vintage, if care is taken, they outperform and out live us all. If a machine is treated like a rental, it will end up in a landfill.

Quick question for you!! I just got a Pfaff Hobby 1142 for $80 Canadian ($50 US) so seemed like a deal. The thread kept getting jammed in the bobbin case, so I took it apart and dusted and oiled. @@montyollie it sounds like it’s coming from the motor area. Maybe the motor drive belt is loose. If your belt is the grooved type, it will make a grinding sound if it’s loose.

@@shellygregory2211 test it to make sure everything works. Just know that if there’s an electronic malfunction, it might be challenging to resolve. If its price is nominal, why not? If they’re asking a lot for it, proceed with caution.

I was gifted this old machine and can't figure out how to turn it on. I've got it plugged in. I try to turn on the light, nothing happens. It may need a new light bulb. But when I step on the pedal, nothing happens either. Is there a power button I am not seeing?

@@brownjrfive the light switch is in the center opening under the top piece that has the knobs. It’s a knob that you turn. Disengage the hand wheel clutch and see if the motor runs when it’s not powering the machine. Give the hand wheel a couple turns towards the front to see if it will start. Double check your plug ins and power cords. Thats about all it can be.
