@@ChantaalReads for me it was a surprise as a lor of reviewers were saying how complicated the plot is. While the reader needs to pay atention, I did not found it difficult. It helped that I wrote the cast of characters so to not keep turning to the first pages.

I remember the Shrike being scarier in the second book. Also, he named the Shrike after a cute little bird who impales its prey on sharp twigs and branches! It's nickname is the Butcherbird!
@theanswerisbooks16 күн бұрын
Also, it might help you to know that the Stormlight books are literally three books in one. He structures each one like a trilogy, and I think he's pretty exacting on what he puts in. Anyway, that's why they're so long, and he designed them that way on purpose so the reader could really immerse themselves in the world. I think most of it does have a purpose. Anyway, you don't necessarily have to listen to me, but I always wish they were longer lol.

@@theanswerisbooks That explains....SO much about the structure of book one, especially the last third. I'm waiting to get a little more groove back before jumping back into Words of Radiance. I feel a slump coming onnnn D:

You're so right that it's baffling that The Spear Cuts Through Water wasn't nominated for anything. Awards committees were sleeping on it just like everyone else. They must just not have read it!

How funny! I started reading 'The Spear Cuts Through Water' early last year, not having heard much about it, just because I had this feeling I should read it. Then life distracted me and I put it down, but earlier today it popped into my head spontaneously when I was trying to decide on a fantasy to read, and now I've seen your video! The stars are aligning - I must read this immediately!

I can really relate to what you said about not guessing mysteries! I am also totally here to let the story take me along. In middle school I remember reading assigned books and being assigned worksheets that said, "what do you think will happen next?" and I remember always hating that question.

Omg Lex from The 100 takes me back lol… I wasn’t a huge Clarke/Lex shipper cause I loved Bellarke but DAMN Lex’s ending was truly awful Spear Cuts Through Water didn’t 100% work for me but it’s so masterfully crafted that I love seeing people gush about it! It’s so underrated and it’s a tragedy it didn’t win all the awards.
@ChantaalReadsАй бұрын
They made so many truly awful decisions in that show, especially as a Bellamy fan. ☠️ I’m genuinely shocked that Spear wasn’t showered with nominations last year. Genuinely.
@zixaz00Ай бұрын
@@ChantaalReads seriously, every time I saw awards announced last year I kept being disappointed when it wasn't mentioned. Like I love Legends & Lattes but there was no good reason for that to get nominated for every award instead of Spear! Spear was nominated for the Ursula K Le Guin prize but didn't win. Literature Science Alliance really enjoyed the winner and Spear so it least it seems to have lost to a worthy winner!
@ChantaalReadsАй бұрын
@@zixaz00 Ooh yeah I watch her too and the winner last year is on my TBR! At least I know I can lean toward the Ursula K LeGuin awards as a benchmark for some good and interesting nominations. The Hugo and Nebula nominations this year have not been doing it for me.

Hey Chantaal, good to see this video! I enjoyed it :) Sad to hear about that graphic novel. I can see what you mean about the lack of backgrounds really ruining it. The Jasmine Throne felt really slow for me too. It took me almost a month to read it. I read the second one on audio and enjoyed it a lot more, and I think the format is partially the reason. So maybe you could try on audio? For me I mainly kept going because I loved Suri’s debut series so much so I trusted her, and while I’m glad I continued, I still like her previous series more. I’m not sure if you’ve read it though so idk if that is helpful or not lol
