I'm not sure if this is a good strategy mathematically. Psychologically, getting the riskiest spots out of the way first means you experience less tension, and it feels nicer when you finally get to a spot where you realize you can't lose. It does come at the cost of the excitement you'd feel from leaving the riskiest spots for last.

No, its not the same game. You often use the distribution of the remaining letters to choose the space. For example if you know there are a lot of X left to draw, you choose an space where an X would be great.

In case anyone wants to understand why strategy doesn't affect the chance of winning, here's a way of looking at it (although I guess someone has already said something like this at some point): If you place the tiles randomly face down to start with, it clearly doesn't matter in what order you turn them up -- you just win if that random arrangement of tiles works out. But, if you shuffle the face-down tiles before turning any tile face up, that's also irrelevant because shuffling tiles that are already properly shuffled can't have any effect. But, if you shuffle then it doesn't matter whether the tiles are face down on the board or in the pool -- you're just choosing a random tile.
