Which black would you recommend in the Rublev range, to join this selection of pigments?

I would say the Bone Black which is the same thing as Ivory Black. It's the most versatile and reliable single pigment black. :)

It seems you have a prejudice against China because you don't give any reasons for why the quality is bad that have anything to do with painting. And as far as I am concerned personally, I don't buy paints as poisonous as lead white simply because I am clumsy and I don't want to die any younger than I would die normally. I have tried lead white in the past and I don't see it have any properties that I liked nearly as much as titanium white, which is a personal taste thing as far as the color goes and my style of using oil paints which of course is a very personal thing obviates the necessity of lead white's drying and film forming properties. If I want a good permanent warmer and more transparent white than titanium white, I can make one very easily without having to resort to something that is very poisonous to paint with. Back in Rembrandt's day they had no choice. Today we have a choice for a safer paint that isn't a lot of ways more flexible than lead white. In other words I can make titanium white act like lead white for my uses whereas I cannot make lead white act like titanium white without using titanium white in the first place. If you love lead white then go ahead and use it of course. I am not doing your paintings and you are not doing mine.
@walcottfineart50887 күн бұрын
Yes, each artist should use the colors and paints that work for them! If you don't like lead white then that is perfectly fine and there is no need to use it. The only thing that is a fact regardless of painting technique is that lead is very good for oil paintings. It chemically helps the paint film stay more stable and flexible over centuries. I find myself using both Titanium and lead depending on what the painting needs. Thanks for watching! :)
@BryanJRiolo-q5h7 күн бұрын
@walcottfineart5088 I know about the good properties of lead for oil painting whether it's in the whites or the yellows or the reds. Considering the way I paint with oils I don't, I don't think I need lead to make the paintings I work on last long enough for both my satisfaction and my customers' satisfaction. It's sort of like if I had a zoo, lead based, and arsenic based paints, and antimony based paints are comparable to having a tiger to bring people in, but with the proviso that I have to live in the same room as the tiger all the time. Nope. I will look at the tiger and have people look at the tiger in a separate room, which means I will only look at those paints on dried paintings other artists have done. Way too many artists have died young from using very poisonous materials. You paint with what you want to paint with, and I will paint highly permanent paintings with what I want to paint with. I know you don't want to force anybody to paint with these materials, but I do know a lot of beginners are fascinated with materials that are extremely dangerous to them. I myself hesitate to recommend something that might shorten their lives by two or three decades or outright kill them. Unlike Rembrandt and painters from older times, we do have choices.

Jason, even though you made these videos on color seven years ago, I have just found them. It's perfect timing for me, because I am returning to oils like I used in art lessons back in the 80's. I picked my painting up again about six years ago using acrylics and only accomplishing a couple paintings a year. Now, I want to be a more finished artist. I want to put that shine on water and creamy mixture in the clouds. Therefore, I am about to invest in oils again. I have been taking notes. You have been a wealth of information that has directed me on what and where to buy. I can't thank you enough. You have probably just saved me from buying the wrong paints and wasting my time and money. I'm gonna use your recipe to mix my own medium also. Thank you!

In spiritual circles, they believe that love bombing and being supportive will help a narcissist personality disorder. I'm not talking about having narcissistic tendencies which I don't believe exists. Yes, on the spectrum of ego or self centeredness, yes we are at various levels of being self centered. But we are a balance of ego centric and gregarious beings. I was the target of such a narcissist. Despite having a psychology minor and a nursing background, I haven't encountered one before. I'm struggling with dealing with the aftermath of being told I need to be loving and understanding. 🙏🏼

@@walcottfineart5088 Meanwhile the average Europian breakfast is coffee with a cigarette. I think it has to do with the working environment (which we have very strict rules in) when making lead paints. When it comes to oil painting it has a very low chance of being dangerous if handled correctly. But yeah it was during the 2000 that they scared everybody shitless with the leadpaint bans including me. Sadly it can't be bought anywhere other than special paint manufacturers.

For the split primary palette, I would substitute Burnt Umber for Black. Burnt umber is more versatile as you can make warm/cool blacks by mixing with Ultramarine and it can be used to de-saturate other colors esp in landscapes. Convenient secondaries that I prefer include chrome green, dioxazine purple and cad orange. Diox is a good start for landscape shadows.
@davefaulkner6302Ай бұрын
Regarding the Zorn palette, you cannot use any black. Zorn used an Ivory Black, which is very blue especially when mixed with plenty of white, and can be used as a blue when mixing. Other black pigments do not have this property and will not work.

So I just recently got 150 ML ultramarine blue from gambling artist grade paint and lots of dry clumpy pieces were in it. Pretty sure air got in there and now I want to change to a whole different brand because of that it’s very serious and consistency that I, do not tolerate and I think the high-end paints are pretty expensive but then you showed Blue Ridge so I’m gonna go for Blue Ridge and see what that’s like so thanks for your video

Hi Jason! I'm going through this video and I heard you say that a cadmium 150ml tube was around 40ish dollars? Right now, here in Europe, I find them at 80ish euros, around 90 dollars. Did they go up in price because of inflation or I'm buying at the wrong place? If so, do you know good shops to buy in Europe?
@walcottfineart50882 ай бұрын
Yes, the price has gone up in the years since I posted this video. I suspect you are also getting some export fees that aren't added on here in the USA since that's where Gamblin in made. Here they're stilli going for about $55 per large tube. I checked Jackson's in the UK which carries Gamblin. You can order online from them and they ship worldwide. They have the large tubes for $66 which is about 60 euros. Jacksonsart.com Thanks for watching! :)

Hello. I'm from Spain and I don't find this lead oils. Where do you buy the rublev? There is a website called natural pigments and it looks like it's their official website but there are only 50ml tubes and they are around 50€. Is there a place where I can buy one larger? I don't know where to find blockx or Utrecht either. Can you help me, please?
@walcottfineart50882 ай бұрын
Rublev is sold by Natural Pigments yes, and I do believe you can get their Lead White from their EU site. It is very expensive. Unfortunately, there's no getting around that. Here in the US the 50mL tubes of lead white are about $50 so near the same. The big ones are $130. Some of these white brands aren't made anymore since I posted the video. If the expense is not worth it for you, I do recommend Winsor & Newton's Flake WHite Hue. It's a nice white. Thanks for watching!
