What do you make of this - I was brought up in South Wales bilingually but somehow lost my Welsh in my teens and twenties. I've tried so many times to recapture it by speaking, but every time have been put off by the negativity of fluent Welsh speakers I try to speak to. I've told this to someone whose job is to encourage Welsh adults to speak Welsh, she was, naturally, outraged and supportive, but it still happens. (Maybe I pick the wrong people!) I believe in a Welsh republic, with an elected government, I desperately hope a socialist one. However, despite my love for the language, I've begun to think it's actually an obstacle to this aim - the absurd worry of a free Wales 'compulsorily' speaking Welsh gives, (I think!) people the excuse they need to oppose it. Compare us with Scotland - no language issue worth bothering about, and they're very likely to be independent in the next few years. There's some hope there - just some - will an independent Scotland fire up the Welsh? I'm far from convinced!!

An independent Scotland would be a definite boost to hopes of a republic of our own. After all, the SNP heap high praise on Plaid Cymru’s fight for independence over the years. I’m not anti English or even anti British. However, I feel there is little hope for a positive future if Westminster continue to govern us with their self centred policies. I’m bilingual although not in the language of my birth. I try my hardest and hope to get there one day. Really disappointing you have experienced this negativity in your encounters, just don’t give up. Personally I think that a bilingual society would thrive in a republic as it does in many countries.

@@steviegardner I'm not ant-English either, I love England and have many English friends, plus an English son-in- law. They all get the point that not wanting to be ruled from England ( I prefer 'from' to 'by') is not hostility to English people. I have bigger problems with South Wales Labour Party people who crudely denounce 'nationalism'. They don't like being called British Nationalists in response I find! For what it's worth, I avoid the word 'nationalist' in favour of 'republican', I quite like George Orwell's view that 'nationalist' has negative, aggressive connotations ( he preferred 'patriot'). When I ask my Labour chums whether they denounce Gandhi, who did call himself a nationalist, they go strangely quiet! Agreed of course about not giving up on Welsh - I've just let what really are a few negative encounters bug me too much'. I hope you're right about Scotland - like I said I'm far from sure - and I love the point about a bilingual society being a marvellous thing, it should be inspiring not frightening. This must I think be pushed as much as possible by republicans to try to overturn the fear of the language I mentioned.
