If things were different in my world, I might try. I used to have a really bad temper myself back then I probably would’ve challenged him now. I may show him that there’s a different way to live that war isn’t everything.

Seems a bit arrogant. The speech that changed the world? It changed America to be sure, but I'm pretty sure the people in Africa, Europe, South America and The Middle East among many others didn't care at all and to this day, it hasn't had much effect on those countries.

This is a pointless thought experiment. It's like saying we already live on a world that is 10 times stronger because gravity was supposed to be 0.98 m/s^2. Nature adapts to the rules of nature.

Thanks for this. I have been incubating (pun intended) an epic fantasy series for many years. After I get a solid career and am self-supporting, I will begin the real work of doing the bulk of the writing. Anyway, in this book series, humanity is at war with an alien alliance of six different races. Three of these races, (though it could be reduced to just two) reproduce through laying eggs rather than giving live birth. I have already thought of some of the implications you made in this video for how those races would operate their societies based on this form of reproduction, but I haven't thought of everything you mentioned here. It just goes to show how there are so many things to take into account when it comes to world building, which is why I watch videos like this for research. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! Writing an epic fantasy series is an incredible endeavor, and it’s inspiring to see how deeply you’re diving into world-building. We’re honored that our video could be a helpful resource for your research. Best of luck with your series-your attention to detail and dedication will surely bring your world to life!

I think people tend to assume that if we laid eggs, this would free up the parents (specifically the mother), but this is not likely true. Having watched nature documentaries and seen how egg-laying parents labor to protect their eggs, a major problem with laying eggs is how cumbersome they are to protect when you don't carry them inside you. Having eggs out in the world is a huge target for everything that wants to eat or destroy them, and it's less straightforward for the mother/father to protect the eggs because you can't depend on the same reflexes you use to protect yourself; for situations where you have to choose, that moment of indecision can cost either you or the egg, whereas if the fetus is inside the mother, there's no conflict, protecting yourself is the same as protecting the baby, you can depend on the same instincts. It's not great to run/flee while pregnant, but particularly in the earlier trimesters it's still possible and you can be very fast when you have a placental pregnancy, whereas you risk dropping an egg while you run, especially since their shape would be round and therefore less ergonomic to carry, and the egg would be the same size all throughout development, meaning you don't have an easier time maneuvering in the earlier trimesters versus the later ones. A lot of birds and reptiles that look after their eggs do end up being chained to one spot, because they have to guard the nest and they can't carry the eggs with them, so it's actually MORE restrictive than mammalian pregnancies. You have much less control over the conditions of the egg; with placental pregnancies you are generally fine if your body is in good shape, and even if you aren't, normally the fetus would just take as much as it can from you, but with the egg, you have to take care of your condition and the egg separately, as these are not connected. Furthermore, I think everyone assumes that we would lay a hen-sized egg if we were egg-layers, and would therefore bypass the pain of labor; I don't think that would be how it worked. Instead, the egg would already be the size of a newborn baby, it's just the zygote inside hasn't filled it completely yet, so it would still hurt and be very difficult for bipedal humans. Then there's the hatching process, which is its own science; you can have a shell that's too hard and traps the baby inside and suffocates it. If the parent is the one to break it, they have to consider if it's too early or too late. We can be like certain reptiles or fish that just lay a ton of eggs and forget about them too, but these have a high failure rate and mothers would need to lay a lot of eggs to justify the risk, which somewhat negates the whole up side of laying eggs to free up the mother, especially if each egg were the size of newborn babies and required the same amount of pain and labor to pass. I think bringing new life is just hard no matter what, you're either expending a ton of eggs and dying afterwards, or you're chained to the nest looking after it, or you have to live with your body changing around the baby. There's no system without its drawbacks.

This is such a thoughtful and well-reasoned perspective! You’ve really dug into the complexities of reproduction and highlighted why the challenges of bringing new life into the world aren’t necessarily "easier" just because the method changes. Your observations about the logistics of protecting eggs and the added vulnerabilities of external development versus internal pregnancy are spot on. I especially appreciate your point about how instincts to protect oneself overlap with protecting an internal fetus, whereas external eggs require a whole different set of behaviors and challenges. Your comment is an excellent reminder of how nuanced and complex nature truly is. Thank you for sharing such a well-thought-out analysis!

Not human, but I have a sapient alien species in my sci fi novel that lays eggs. The females, like many birds of prey, are larger and nastier than the males. They usually lay 2 football-sized eggs at a time, with the female taking one and the male the other, with no further contact between them, as each parent raises their own kid alone. However, my main character from this species had his mate lay only one egg, so he was forced to give up his parental rights. He later adopted a human child, whom he affectionately calls his "hatchling".
