Hey can you suggest how should one go about memorizing the keyboard as in circle of 5th and stuff related to it
@cook-music10 күн бұрын
@@tuhinsensarma3337 personally, I don't use the circle of fifths. I also don't use it when I teach. I think it's about getting really good at a couple of scales/keys and then slowly branching out from there. There's really not a lot that can replace hard work and practice, but if you just focus on one or two keys to start and get really comfortable within those, then you can continue to expand gradually all while feeling confident along the way. Ultimately, there's a lot of shapes on the piano that we're expected to remember, and while it can feel daunting, just start with some small goals. Goals. There's really no substituting practice and hard work to get these patterns internalized, so you might as well make it a bit easier on yourself and specialize in a couple of keys to get started

Very fair! All of these songs are improvisations so I try to keep them simple enough that I can come back to themes later within the piece. I also have these all available as sheet music for my students so I didn't want to get too advanced, but I agree that this could definitely be taken to the next level. Thank you for your insight!

After listening to this lovely composition over and over, I decided to purchase a copy. It's very well written and my favorite one. With my hand span being below average, I have to adapt my fingering in order to play the second beat in measure 4 (I can reach it as written but it's slightly stressful because of chronic tendinitis), but overall it is a super lovely piece and not that difficult to learn. Thank you for your work. I can feel the genuine soul and authenticity in your playing. Watching your improvisations, performances, or educational videos is always a pleasure. Just the way you stand is enchanting.

Well thank you! Yes, I saw the activity on the store today, thank you for the purchase. I try to write simple pieces that are touching, because I think at the end of the day music doesn't have to be complex to convey a lot of emotion. I hope you enjoy playing the piece!

Also called constant structure in some contexts
@cook-music4 ай бұрын
@@_sonicfive very cool, love learning new terms I'll check this out. Thanks
@cook-music4 ай бұрын
It looks like constant structure is a little bit different, unless I misunderstand it. It would be like moving a progression with chord qualities that are the same. So Cmaj7, Fmaj7, Dmaj7. Happy I learned this term, but I'm not sure that's really what I'm showing in this video. Curious to hear your insight
@_sonicfive4 ай бұрын
@@cook-music I am a bit lax with theory terms. Because I’ve just picked up concepts as I go. But, as I understand it, playing a melody line then repeating it in a different key lets you keep the movement going, achieving the side step you are talking about. It also applies to chord progressions as long as you keep the same qualities and more obvious if you keep the same vocings. I’ve heard this as a resource in every genre. It surely surprises the listener. And even allows you to modulate effortlessly without having to hit a dominant chord, etc. it’s a fun experiment tor sure. We may not call constant structure to what you are doing here. It’s okay! 👍 :)
@cook-music4 ай бұрын
@@_sonicfive I see where you're coming from with this now, I didn't realize it worked with partial progressions as well too. Thanks for bringing me to this term, I'll look more into it.

Thanks SO MUCH for this, Josh!! I really want to dive more into songwriting and composition, so I'm trying discipline the ears and spend more time at the keyboard on a daily basis, (I play the reeds.). Just returning to music after a 20+ year hiatus, btw. While I was never the strongest in solfege, I was most weak when it came to descending intervals and, say, pitches separated by half-steps, min. 6ths, etc. I really enjoyed this video and it has inspired me to work harder. Simply want to get to the point every sound I hear, I try to identify it. I will share your channel with others. Best of Luck to you. Peace
