Never hold your glove up like that immediately. Watch the pros. Their arms and are down but ready. They're tracking the ball with their eyes while in an athletic stance, ready to make a move when necessary. Once they have the ball locked in, they'll put up their glove to catch it in the same way as if they were having a catch with somebody. Keeping your arms up equals tense. Keep your arms down, but ready, and stay relaxed and patient

If it's do or die, the fielder would be approaching the ball faster than shown here. If he's coming in faster, then he can't field the ball with the foot on the glove-hand side in front. It has to be the other foot. Try it and you'll see the fielder needs an extra step. So, if he needs an extra step, it's best to field the ball with the foot opposite the glove in front. This not only gives you time to gather yourself, it will also allow you to be more accurate and be able to add more power to the throw. Fielding the ball opposite the glove-hand side also makes it easier to bend over and to keep the ball in front of you in case of a bobble.

I've found that fielding the ball with the opposite glove foot helps you get set for your throw more easily and keeps you in balance, glove side foot is still faster though.
