Me neither. Charlie actually returned an email of mine about 10 years ago saying he wasn't interested in doing any more game shows when Rod Roddy had died (in '03) (I asked him if TPiR called on him then) but he did tell me (and I knew this) that he WAS considered when Johnny Olson passed in 1985, but couldn't do any on-air auditions due to his "scrabble" work. I used to listen to Charlie on armed forces radio when I served in S. Korea in '94-'95.

there were 70s and 80s shows that were not the best or most popular of all time, while all three networks and syndication had quite a few in those days, some were quite short lived.

Rick and everyone else, don't know if you've heard, but the news broke today that we lost Charlie Tuna earlier this month. Very sad, I was, to get this news and I'm sorry to anyone who I'm breaking this news to. RIP Charlie Tuna.

+Kevin Henry Thanks so much for posting this Kevin. This news came as a total shock to me. I always felt like Charlie was one of those timeless voices who would go on forever. It looks like a press release was posted on his website today at charlietuna.com which provides a little bit of a recap of his career. I echo your sentiments Kevin, RIP Charlie Tuna.

+Rick Mandl Of course, sir. Your story about how Charlie inspired you to go into radio is one of the best stories I've ever heard. I spent five years in the industry myself in Cincinnati, inspired by greats such as Charlie and Chuck Woolery, to name a couple. It's a sad day for all of us, but to hear he went peacefully... you really can't ask for anything more. Thanks for getting back to me.

@The1980sRock true i have to say that the 70 to the late 80s are the golden age of game shows. Almost every show from all 3 networks(CBS,NBC, and ABC) was a hit.

Even though by the 1980s and early 1990s abc-TV had no new hit game shows. Family Feud with Richard Dawson, which premiered on July 1976 and ran until June 1985 carried abc Daytime’s ratings. Every new game show abc Daytime premiered after the original Feud did never lasted more than 6 months on average. Plus by the 1980s and the 1990s abc Daytime became far more focused on their soap operas and it showed why their new game shows were short-lived.

And most of abc’s 1980s game shows went up against Scrabble on NBC and The Price is Right on CBS, both big hit game shows of the 1980s, which didn’t help.

If you look real closely in the opening after Charlie says "It's the crossword game you've played all your life, but never quite like this." The letters appear in this order: B, C, S, B, R, E, L, A.
