Please I have a question in Data Science carrier scope. Which is better to study and having better employment prospects... 1) Health Data Science and Statistics ( more specialised) Or 2) Data Science and Business analytics. ( More General and less specialised?
@AdesanyaAyeni23 күн бұрын
Good question and thanks for asking. The first thing I will say is this: it depends on the sector you are interested in working in. However, widening your scope is important. As you mentioned, a Health Data Science and Statistics degree almost speaks for itself, indicating that you are in the healthcare sector. If you are applying for roles in financial services, they might assume your knowledge is restricted to healthcare and consider other candidates ahead of you. But this is just on the surface and merely an assumption. In reality, the title of the degree doesn't matter too much in the labor market. The caveat is in professional fields; for example, you cannot bring an architect to do a doctor's job, (you will need someone who has been to medical school and graduated) and you wouldn't hire just anyone to do architectural drawings simply because they claim to know how to draw a house plan (in a civilized environment). However, if someone can prove to you in a technical assessment that they can solve a problem using data and the right tools, and possibly provide insights that will help a business, the type of degree they have won't matter. In essence, if two people apply for a job-one with a health data science degree and the other with a general data science degree assuming the one with the health data science degree has the right technical skills, has researched well, and knows what is required for the role, they might stand a better chance of getting the job. In summary, if you ask me to choose one, of course, I will choose the general data science degree. However, if I am already in the healthcare sector and looking for a higher level role that will help me progress towards my goals, I might go for the healthcare data science degree. With my current knowledge and the degree, I would have a significant advantage over other candidates when applying for healthcare-related roles. I hope I have answered your question.
