I listened to this song a few years ago and back then, to be honest I only liked the sound of it. I've never actually listened to the beautiful lyrics. And when I actually fully listened to it, I finally understood the meaning. So here's my interpretation of this song: I think their father passed away :( and this is what the song is about. "Since I said goodbye to everything I knew" - a final goodbye perhaps? "we were running we were playing when we still knew nothing more" - Trey and Tyler when they were young and innocent. "And daddy look at what I learned to play today. Do you think that I'll be famous one day?" - Them learning the guitar and contemplating whether they will be famous or not. "So thanks for taking care of me" - Their father was obviously someone special to them. He took care of them. and finally, "I hope that I make you proud" - Them wanting to let their father know that what they are doing is for him and they want to make him proud. Again this is just my interpretation. I truly love this song. Ps. Sorry for the long comment :3

For all the people who think this is about a break up or death listen to the lyrics, its about the two brothers going off to college and missing their family but hoping to make them proud still but know that if they fail they will always be supported by loved ones with what they do enjoy the song :)

My beloved dad passed away 4 weeks ago and my friend introduced this song to me. I've never cried so hard since he left. I've been in denial that dad is gone and this song hit the right spot. It's like a reality check for me. That he is no longer around when I need him :(
