I grew up in Minnesota and worked on a farm next to Pine Island. I first heard this poem shortly before my last Iraq deployment in 2011 that drastically changed my life forever. I’ve often wondered if I had been living an intense globetrotting existence because I was running from those days on the farm. Thanks for sharing it, great poem!

Thanks for this, Cliff. Well done. I used to be very partial to the month of December, maybe because it's my birthday month, but October, man, there's something about October, especially up here in Michigan. Peace to you, sir. 🍁

Amazing. Louis Gluck I felt was a difficult poet in terms of accessibility. Nevertheless I bought and reading her collected works and see the cutting poems on the personal experiences.

It’s great coincidence. Thank you for giving us chance to read learn new information new vocabularies. In the past only travel aboard or looking for books to learn . Nowadays KZbin channels as open universities for every one google is our library.

Thank you mr Clifford for your wonderful cultural literary channel. Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American KZbin channels. We are as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level, improve our English as well , literature lovers too . I gathered main theme of poem you mentioned and poet biography briefly here it’s louise Gluck ( 1943- 2023 ) she was American poet , essayist. She won Nobel prize in literature 2022 whose judges praised her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual extended universal . Her other awards included Pulitzer Prize , national humanities medal, national book award critics circle award . She was poet laureate of USA . Her notable works such as the triumph of Archilles , the wild iris . Martins main theme the sun shines by mailbox on themes such as nature as nurturing force . The speaker Gluck poem reveals that contrary to Noah theories on depression, they feel passionately/ attached to living tree . Nature is seen as both protective and nourishing force to speaker . Iam so sorry to be little long but reading and writing both are great ways to improve our English as non native speakers. I hope I can learn a lot from your knowledge. Best wishes for you your dearest ones .

The villanelle is my favorite poetry form. There is something about the structured cadence which is so gently moving. Auden’s “If I could tell you” for instance I can listen to over and over and weep at the beauty of the same few lines repeated throughout emphasizing the loving desire to help but understanding the reality of its futility. Wonderful reading. Thank you!

Isn't that just what our minds do. Make a negative judgement on a beautiful time(life), worth more than any achievement. And while trying to achieve, long for the beautiful time. Best to you

Thank you for the lovely reading. Not sure but Seamus may be pronounced Shay-muss as in Seamus Heaney. Not that it took anything away from the poem, either way. Thanks again.

Thank you. It brought me back to my dad watering the lawn, pulling taped hoses until they unfurled to stretch and reach that far away corner of the yard with just the right adjustment to the cascading arc. Wonderful.
