Nice catch man!! This is such a tiny crossing tbh :/ You should've filmed the north side as well
@thepiratequeen8910 күн бұрын
I'm quite glad they added the traffic signals at the crossing to stop people queueing across it, as people did that so often it was scary! They also amended the traffic light sequence at High Street to help clear traffic on the other side of the crossing to ensure no cars were sitting on the tracks.

I believe that before the mernda extension, along with the track duplications, took place, this crossing used to have no cantilever and a WCH M bell
@pengo3478912 күн бұрын
In addition to that, there weren’t any traffic lights preventing traffic from queuing across the crossing when activated before duplication
@KFCBOY-nd4qg15 күн бұрын
Im surpirsed that the GS type 2 e bells survived because typically on metro when a crossing gets upgraded they would replace the old e eblls with GS type 3 😮
@pengo3478915 күн бұрын
True, although I guess they are still compliant so they wouldn’t have any reason to remove them, which is nice :D I reckon if they were GS type 1s then they would definitely be replaced, eg Park St, Moonee Ponds

Used to spend a bit of time here - Gallaghers Crossing - in '89-90 when my shop was just over the road. And prior to that in the early 80s on the school bus which had to stop and open the door before crossing - but better still until 1981 in the Warragul school train behind an L class. :)
@emdB672 ай бұрын
Surely the worst-sounding crossing in the state. 😲😆 As if the e-bells aren't bad enough on their own, they pair them up with (totally unnecessary) alarms on the pedestrian gates that also sound like they're struggling to keep going. 😆 I lived at Longwarry 1981-1991 and sometimes got to work the steel hand gates that were on the crossing until 1988 - with permission (usually in the form of a nod or wave) from the stationmaster. Saw those replaced with black and white wishbone boom barriers and hybrid bells - which considering I could clearly hear them indoors a block away, were more than adequate. I've only been to this crossing once since the second track was finally opened across it. I waited there and endured those dreadful sounds for about 12 minutes as the paper train slowly crossed and then stopped, blocking the crossing as it waited for a Vlocity from Bunyip. At least got to see both trains moving over the crossing at the same time. Something I never thought I'd see when I lived nearby decades earlier. 😁 Thanks for the video. 😉
@pengo347892 ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliment :D That’s pretty cool that you were around the Longwarry area back in the 80s, seeing how the hand gates got replaced with booms, and also what equipment it used to have. I agree with you in that the current bells sound abhorrent, they seem to be continually downgrading from hybrids to Safetran E-Bells to WCH E-Bells 🤣 A rumour that I’ve heard is apparently the WCH E-Bells have been replaced by normal Safetran E-Bells, but I’m not entirely certain about it (Haven’t gone to the crossing by myself) - If they have, then I’m curious as to why V/Line replaced them. Either way, the pedestrian alarms still sound horrible - They should’ve programmed the normal sound rather than this lower pitched one IMO Again, thanks for all the info about the history of this crossing, it was really interesting to read :)
@emdB672 ай бұрын
@@pengo34789 yes, they're awful. But they do the job I guess. Nobody could say that they didn't realise that the crossing was active. 😆 Unfortunately this crossing missed out on ever having been blessed with teardrop bells. Or other electromechanical bells for that matter.
