Truman never forgave Ike for joining the Republican party. Harry had encouraged him to run for president, but as a Democrat. And for Harry being a loyal Democrat was as close to an article of religious faith that he subscribed to. During the 52 campaign Truman attacked Ike in language that wasn't often used back then, especially after Ike failed to defend George Marshall to Truman's satisfaction from attacks by Joe McCarthy. Eisenhower was careful not to respond in kind, but privately he was livid. Their relations were so frosty that Eisenhower refused to go in the White House on inauguration day for the customary coffee with the outgoing president. Their relationship remained ice cold until they found themselves seated next to each other during Jack Kennedy's funeral in 1963 after which they had a private meeting over drinks and agreed to let the past go.

Eisenhower wasn’t a partisan guy. I think he chose to run as a Republican because Dems had been in the White House for 20 years. It’s always healthy for a democracy to have a reasonable back and forth. I also think he wanted to distance himself from Truman, because Truman was pretty disliked by the end of 52, and the Dems in general were on the downturn

I think Truman was always upset about Eisenhower's failure to come to the defense of General Marshall (the man who had promoted Ike over others to be European commander) when Marshall was unfairly attacked by McCarthy. Eisenhower later admitted that was his greatest regret.

Yep, Truman had tremendous respect for Eisenhower before the 1952 campaign. He was disappointed when Eisenhower ran as a Republican instead of a Democrat, but when Eisenhower didn't speak up in Marshall's defense, Truman publicly lit into him. I don't think they ever reconciled.
@robertbruce68652 жыл бұрын
Actually, the Dems tried to bypass Truman in 1948 by recruiting Ike. James Roosevelt was one of the leaders of this movement. When Ike turned them down, Claude Pepper tried to establish a candidacy. That failed, and the Southern Dems (Strom Thurmond) and extreme Left wing (Henry Wallace) split and ran their own candidates. The fact that Truman won in 1948 is nothing short of miraculous. The Dems did essentially the same thing in 1860 and handed the Election to Lincoln.

Eisenhower and Truman traveled to the inauguration together, but Eisenhower would not come in to have coffee with the Trumans before the inauguration. The excuse he gave was that he did not want to enter the White House until he was actually President. More likely, it was due to tensions that arose between them during the 1952 campaign. Gen. George Marshall was being attacked by Senator McCarthy. Eisenhower didn't defend him, and Truman publicly raked Eisenhower over the coals for it.

If they had kept them OPEC would not have us bent over an oil barrel. Above everything he used GOD'S Anointing to make His Decisions as he is a GREAT CHRISTIAN MAN. He proved that Honesty and Politics Doesn't work in this Great Nation. Although it that didn't keep him from doing great work after he left office.
