When has any Ulster unionist from the six north eastern counties of Ireland been part of a British government that has ever been able to make any big decisions about Britain and the British people? If Ireland had not been partitioned then the total protestant community in Ireland would be approaching 20%. If they wanted to they would dominate the new country, many other countries are dominated thus. De Valera's dream of a poor country with total equality of peasants and poets would not have been.

At the time of the Troubles, Unionists (Protestants) were a majority in Northern Ireland and they didn't want to leave the UK. So this guy Paddy Short in effect wanted to go against the majority there and compel them to reunite with Ireland against their wishes.

He could do with reading a good history book. First of all Ireland was not a country, it was six kingdoms, who lived in conflict with each other. Then one of the kingdoms decided to attack England, raiding our coastal towns and slaughtering the entire populations of them. Eventually we invaded that Kingdom, and went on though it to take the rest. That's when Ireland became one country, when the English made it one country.

I'm not gonna get into the history too much because it's pretty complicated. Ulster was a plantation (that was the original word for it) in the sense that the British government (usually called England) 'planted' people from Scotland and England in Northern Ireland in what we'd understand now (and probably then) as colonialism with the interests of eliminating the Irish (natives) to make the land profitable for Britain (England). This happened in Scotland, Wales, North America, India, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, etc. It's a form of limited genocide. So yes, as an Englishman, I can see why all these people were fucked off to say the least. We need to have a true history of british imperialism that is taught so that people realise my nation weren't benign bringers of law and civility to 'savages', they were invaders who tried to systematically eradicate the peoples and countries of whom they invaded.

If you wanted to have a discussion, you'd have to have a fair discussion. This isn't a fair discussion it's completely one sided. For example. this conversation is only possible because the British invented the internet. And the computer. You'd have to acknowledge the many benefits Britain brought the world while also discussing the trouble that Britain caused. But I doubt very much you'd be capable of such an impartial analysis, because you've written here they "tried to systematically eradicate" peoples. Britain never tried to do that. They governed India with about 1000 civil servants, as if they were trying to eradicate the entire population! You would do well to read Nigel Biggar for a fairer accounting of the Empire.
