This video deserves so many more views! Great quality. I love living in American Fork, super close to Lehi, the freeway and every restaurant and retail center you could ever want within a ten minute drive. I’ve seen our home go up almost 300,00 in value (almost double) in the 4 years we’ve lived here.

Having left San Diego for North Ogden, the long cold winters were the biggest shock, along with the smog (absolutely horrible winter time inversions). Neighbors are really hit or miss! Some wonderful people and some make it very clear "stay off my property". One really nice thing about Utah are the legally open places. Yes, you can take your dirt bike all over and it is a beautiful state. Crime in Utah is low, too. I left my car and house unlocked most all the time. 80 mph speed limit on I-15 makes it a fairly short drive to escape in winter (at least for long weekends). Most all the Mormons were pretty chill I think. One or two didn't want our kids around. My two boys did have a few fights in elementary school over religion but nothing outrageous. I moved there when my boys were babies and am glad I did. Unlike California, plenty of children in Utah for them to play with. Lots of folks in Utah are close-nit with friends and family and just not too interested in others. Can make it seem a bit standoff-ish at times. Public smoking, drinking and cursing is definitely not welcome. If you are not LDS, might be worth renting for a while and get the vibe of the various neighborhood. I probably would have been happier and more at home in SLC or Sandy than North Ogden. Best not to discuss religion much at all. It can be a sore subject.

The ski resort issues you mention are pretty localized to the areas near the canyons. The west side of the valley or south (Utah County) don't have to deal with the traffic, lodging, etc from the tourists. Even without the tourists coming to the resorts, the locals would cause traffic problems in the canyons (they do on the freeway ;-) Maybe downtown gets more tourist business during the winter with the tourists but I tend to avoid downtown SLC.

Would love to hear your thoughts on what the biggest downsides are to living in Salt Lake City?
@dvwilbur
@dvwilbur Ай бұрын
@@LivingIn-SaltLakeCity - I actually live in American Fork near the mouth of American Fork Canyon so I don't have experience living in SLC itself. I avoid going to downtown SLC unless there is an activity there that I am going to (Jazz game, concert, play, etc). The parking is not convenient with the required paid parking on the street. If you aren't using it regularly then it is annoying. The parking rates in the garages are actually not bad compared to other big cities but I can shop in the adjoining cities and not have to worry about paying for parking at all. The traffic can be pretty bad downtown at the peak times although, again, not as bad as other big cities. It seems the first snow storm each year that people forgot how to drive in snowy weather since the prior winter but everyone eventually adjusts after a few storms. I am not a drinker so the liquor laws don't bother me but I can understand how it is weird to drinkers that visit. Didn't we have problems because of that the last time we hosted the Olympics? The air pollution is pretty bad in the winter because of the "inversion" that keeps the bad air down in the valley until we get some wind to clear it out. And it gets pretty bad in the summer also. I live up on the "bench" of the mountain a little bit so I can often see the bad air sitting below me in the lower valley. Going up a canyon on a short drive does get to nice clean air but our jobs are not up there so a majority of the time we are down here in the valleys. Utah (both northern and southern) has some of the most majestic scenery in the USA. I love hiking trails in the canyons and the people here are very nice (at least the area that I live in).

A couple of things you did not get right (from a native): - SLC was not "basically" established by the Mormons, it WAS established by the Mormons. Even those of us who are not religious anymore still have strong ties to family and friends who are religious. Most of us are sick and tired of people moving here willy-nilly from outside, they are a disruption to our culture and way of life. Most people in Utah will smile and be very friendly because that's what their religion teaches, and they will not overtly tell you that they don't want you there. Outsiders are driving up home prices, and most up-and-coming native Utahns who want to buy their own house for a reasonable price will deeply resent you for that. - Road rage: Utah is like the road rage capital of the US at this point, and from what I can see the spike in incidence coincides with influx of non-native Utahns. No one is reporting any association with predominance of any particular group as perpetrators, but Mormons don't tend to run people off the road and the proceed to beat them to death in front of their children (yes, this happened recently). - "Fresh mountain air" had me ROFLing. SLC has some of the WORST air quality in the nation because of the mountains and how they trap pollution. It's not just during the winter. Also, unless you have severe lung or renal disease, your body is designed to and WILL adapt to high altitude in 3-6 months. It WON'T adapt to the pollution. In summary: too many people moving here is causing a lot of problems for us natives, anyone watching this should consider moving elsewhere.
