Is there something submerged that tips this canoe? I've watched this several times and I can't figure out what else could have caused it.

I think it was a combination of the current pushing sideways against the keel, and putting the paddle in at the wrong time or place in a strong current. The canoe had swung out sideways and the current was strong, moving sideways under the canoe. This aluminum canoe has a tall "T" shaped keel running the full length, and the sideways current was already pulling hard on the keel, trying to tip it over, and making them unsteady and off balance. As soon as he put his paddle in the water on the upstream side, the current grabbed the paddle and tried to pull it under the canoe. Before he could let go or pull the paddle out, they tipped over.

@@beardj32 Thanks, Jeff. I'm running the Campus to Coast this year for the first time. I've been devouring everything I can find on it. Are you paddling it this year?

@@barz51 Probably not this year. Hope you have a great time, it's an awesome event! If the weather is warm and water high, I will be jealous and probably come out to watch. Regarding these guys tipping over, I learned that there should always be a rope tied to each end of the canoe. Had a hard time getting their swamped canoe out of the river with 3-5 ft banks; they were exhausted and freezing cold. I think they were in the water for about 15 minutes before being able to climb out.
