My first memory of town falls was around 30 years ago. Capsizing in the main falls and being dragged out of the river along with my boat (a pink mountain bat) by the safety team and thrown unceremoniously over the wall into a pub car park. My boat and paddle quickly followed…

Odd name for your club. I see no canoes in evidence. To all of you new paddlers - welcome to decades of more fun than you can possibly imagine. Yeah, even those of you who use 2 bladed paddles 😝

Half the paddle, twice the man? A couple can be spotted by the observant in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4TRhZSHrdGCnKc But, in general, we've evolved since the troglodyte beginnings and naming of the club.

insane footage. I have rarely felt so immersed watching a kayaking video. What camera did you use and what settings?
@ImperialCollegeCanoeClub6 күн бұрын
Good to hear you enjoyed it! I think good paddlers just seem to glide over features; I think the lite-beatering adds to the immersion. The camera was a GoPro HERO7 Black. Shooting in 1080. I can't recall the frame-rate or other settings offhand, I'll get back to you.

@ImperialCollegeCanoeClub9 күн бұрын
If you want to watch a 1/2-freewheel into attempted shoulder dislocation, you can see that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4TRhZSHrdGCnKc But I'm afraid that the 1/2-freewheel into swim combo is currently beyond us. I've heard rumours of a gnarlier kayaking channel where that might exist, but I haven't been able to find it myself.

Wenn das "nur" 4 ist was macht denn dann einen 5wr Bach aus vom Charakter ?
@ImperialCollegeCanoeClub9 күн бұрын
So, at the higher grades, there's a particular "line" (i.e. "route") that one should follow down the rapid; what distinguishes 4 from 5 (and 6) is how hard it is to follow this route and how bad the consequences are likely to be were you to get "off-line". (Therefore, it's subjective and people will disagree.) Here, it's a bit intense and the moves take a little skill; hitting the right line is a lot more fun, but accidentally ending up somewhere you didn't intend to be isn't all that terrible: for example, the hydraulic "holes" won't hold a swimmer and the rocks aren't dangerously undercut. Probably somewhere in the middle of grade 4. A good heuristic might be: If someone offered you $1000 to swim down the section, would you? If absolutely not, then it's grade 5.

Thank you very much for the nice explanation.

Eh I paddle just as badly with a straight shaft tbh. Yeah it's a good run, we only did this section though, maybe the waterfall section's something for the future.

For real is a class IV that? Woooow looks really hard and fast!
@ImperialCollegeCanoeClub15 күн бұрын
It's on the harder end of the grade-there's a lot of class IV that's easier-but there aren't any especially hard must-make moves (which I think is the distinctive feature of class V). (As you can see, I missed most of the lines and was fine.) That said, was a bit scary paddling it for the first time.
