I get it, the photo makes it look that way, but if they're using the 1893 version, they only need divided violas & cellos, a couple basses, organ, harp, timpani, and some wind instruments. John Rutter has argued that of those only two horns are most necessary, but the score has parts for two bassoons, four horns, and two trumpets. Also in this version, a solo violin is added during the Sanctus and In Paradisum movements. If anything, I feel the choir needs more basses and fewer sopranos and altos - a common complaint with many non-professional groups.

Maybe, but you dont realize that when you hear the performance. A stronger bass in the choir would be appreciated. But this is a fine performance of this wonderful work.
