So interesting those are the key points she got out of it. Nothing of the asymmetry that sympathy pays towards the pro-social, anti-social, and self-interested passions. Nothing of the fact that sympathy is most intensely felt towards self, family, friends, then nation and that this is the order that one should focus. She is precisely the type of people Adam Smith described as lacking self-command, in this case to properly understand the limits of her knowledge. She is clearly vane but it’s not as offensive as if she was actually a legit intellect and proud of it.

But there are a lot of poor people in USA and Hong Kong, because the living prices and rents are extremely. Many people live in the tents on the street and public parks in Hong Kong. Why?

basically the government tricked them to work more for nothing and produce products for the soldiers at their own expense.. a.k.a. the government used their printing press and fake money to steal from it's people.. truly an evil thing to do.. it is so sad to see that we are living in this system for decades now and people still don't understand it..

There's, unfortunately, a tremendous amount of double speak about the WTO and IMF. For example: Selective Framing: People often emphasize the IMF’s supposed goals (e.g., “promoting international monetary cooperation”) while minimizing the actual negative consequences of its policies. For example: Using terms like "belt-tightening" instead of "austerity measures" downplays the human cost of these policies, such as increased poverty and reduced access to essential services. These lead to unknown numbers of deaths in populations with poor social services to begin with, and poor accountability and health services. The populations do not choose these measures, and often they come at tremendous human costs to women and children, and later destabilize the population and the country. The focus on “helping countries with balance of payment problems” can obscure how these interventions often serve creditor nations and global financial markets more than the debtor nations themselves, often locking the debtors into perpetual debt slavery. Glossing Over Power Dynamics: It omits how IMF conditionality frequently transfers decision-making power from sovereign governments to technocrats beholden to Western-dominated financial systems. Euphemisms as a Tool: These euphemisms are tools to sanitize the aims of the IMF, World Bank and IMF. This is clear when they say things such as the phrase “the IMF helps countries commit to reforms they probably would not have undertaken otherwise” - which disguises how these reforms are often forced upon nations under duress, undermining democracy and local priorities, and often leading to crises as seen many times in history.

Joseph Stiglitz's Criticism: In his book Globalization and Its Discontents, Stiglitz critiques institutions like the IMF and the World Bank (closely related to the WTO) for enforcing policies that prioritize Western interests at the expense of poorer nations. These organizations often push developing countries to liberalize their economies, which leads to economic vulnerability, job losses, and social instability. The focus on free trade tends to undermine local industries in developing nations, subjecting them to exploitation by multinational corporations. Economic Hitman Insights: In Confessions of an Economic Hitman, John Perkins details how the WTO and similar organizations exploit developing countries by pushing them into debt traps. This is achieved through large loans and trade agreements that appear to benefit the global economy but ultimately serve the interests of wealthy corporations and the Western powers that control these international institutions. Many developing nations are forced to open their markets to multinational companies, often to the detriment of their local economies, while simultaneously undermining their sovereignty and long-term development.

In IT industry once at time of boom,the output has become a weirdly large so the next turn the capital became higher again with a great multiplier on Productivity thus a great unnecessary wage rate as well as wage provision created a negative growth with the less external threat. Thus the helm has its negative growth characterized by a high attrition and a poor organizational growth.

Dear Prof Tyler and Prof Alex, Thank you for this excellent resource. I have a follow on query and will start by laying out the context. Let us consider the demand for urban walking in our cities. Wherever you look around in Indian cities, the quality of amenities that enable walking -- think about footpaths, crossings at major junctions, so on and so forth, there is a lot of work required. Drawing from your lecture, I understand that the space that abuts the lot of the property owner does not have clear “property rights”. Often, at the individual level, I have observed that the house / shop owner will claim this space by parking personal vehicles, or keeping wares beyond the lot line. Entire communities unanimously decide to install gates and cordon off access to their neighborhoods, and even public utilities install their infrastructure on the passage originally built for movement of people. The obvious cost of these spot transgressions all over the city and over the past few years has led to the inconvenience, interruption, obstruction, and at extreme level, threat to life of the pedestrian braving navigating the hostile streets. Extrapolating to create the big picture, the net result is that large numbers of urban dwellers are discouraged from walking on a daiky basis, and those with greater means (aspire to) shift to personal vehicles such as two wheelers, and cars. Today in the capital of the fastest growing major economy (India), we endure poor air quality all year round. So, the question in my mind is what (legal / policy) fixes and interventions would make clear the property rights of these vital assets that enable urban walking and at the same time reduce transaction costs (monitoring, enforcement) for the public agencies responsible for maintaining these assets ? Should the state assign the responsibility of maintaining these assets (footpaths) to the property owners whose lots are adjacent to the public right of way? How about extracting (even more) revenues from car owners and e-ride hailing vehicle operators (platform owner / individual drivers) who park their vehicles outside their lots (on public land), and channeling this revenue stream to maintain the footpaths. Look forward to your thoughts. With respect, Aman.

LoL so wanted resources? Wasted how? Meaning we waste everyone elses resources instead of our own? Yes things are cheaper to buy in other countries, why though? Well mainly because they pay very low wages. From the brilliant minds that moved out production to China and India since the 70s. The question. Are Americans better off today then they were in the 90s 80s 70s? I would say no. The jobs today in America are mostly service jobs. Low skilled jobs because we manufactured very little here. Not good for a country.
@woodenfloor3131
@woodenfloor3131 2 күн бұрын
What they mean by wasted resources, is that the comparative cost to produce domestically will be more expensive. Also real Household income has almost doubled since the 70s. This means the median household can buy twice as much shit today. There are gains from trade such as comparative advantage which you should look up. Of course, there will be losers and winners when a country opens up to trade, but in the end the aggregate welfare increases.

@@woodenfloor3131 since 2000 the wages for everyday jobs have stayed stagnant. Buying a house since the 2000s has become harder and harder every year. Life hasn't become better. We have outsourced so much that the major jobs today are retail. The middle class is shrinking and becoming poorer. This is real world.
