An interesting addendum that was added to Xanathar's: you can only identify what spell is being cast if you use a reaction or action to make an arcana check. It's a further improvement on illusion -- you only know a spell by its appearance and effect not by it's casting. I think that rule is actually a great mystification tool: we're so used to rules and magic being clearly defined that we forget that "in world" magic is still likely very mysterious. Even when you counterspell, you don't necessarily know what spell you're counterspelling. It's a choice you have to make. I definitely think counterspell needs a bit of rewording to support the xanathar blurb though, like maybe a spellcaster is able to passively know a spell's level or make some kind of power check so that you aren't wasting a slot on a cantrip for example

You know, I always figured high level spells would have some kind of long-term stipulation. I mean, these are things done by VERY FEW people in anyone’s campaign, so the idea of being able to just repeatedly perform what is effectively a miracle without any longer narrative impact is kinda lame (like maxing out a video game character and being unable to enjoy the challenge any more). Clone effectively makes people immortal, so then why would someone choose to become a lich narratively? Well- maybe Clone creates small degradations in the psyche or appearance of people as time goes on. If Simulacrum offers spellcasters access to an army of self-duplicates, why don’t we see the strongest spellcasters forming huge legions of them? Maybe after a certain point the control of the wielder diminishes as their ability is split into many fragments between controlled bodies.

Literally no self respecting Mage has all their spellbooks with them, nor do they not have backups cached away all over the place. So basically, this is either a short term plot device, or you need to get out from behind the screen, because this is generally just a douchebag move. If you do this to one of your players, outside of hyper-specific fringe cases which will only be relevant for veteran DMs who know what they're doing, may you stub your pinky toe constantly and may your every step be felt as stepping on loose LEGO.

This doesn’t work for two reasons. 1) spike growth doesn’t damage on forced movement because it has the “moves into” wording and not the “enters” wording. 2) when you drag a creature by moving while grappling, they are pulled into the square you just left. So you would have to walk through your own spike growth to drag enemies through it.

yeah i can see why most dms ban it. personally i'd just rule that you've made a choice to fall, so technically it does trigger opportunity attacks, and agree on a jumps-per-turn limit based on athletics or something. but i also like high power players because then i get to use high power monsters.

This is the best kind of DnD story. Ludicrously unlikely combinations of abilities and circumstances to create an unforgettable success. I love it.

spirit shroud is one of the best gish spells in dnd 5e and its not even close for char's who make multiple attacks. with things like being able to cast this on yourself before a combat starts and the fact that it applies to every single attack you make on your turn only requiring one bonus action so you dont have to re apply it on every enemy when you change targets, where if your using this spell you are most likely dual wielding. not even talking about how its a higher dmg die then hex and hunters mark and its versatility in what dmg it deals to bypass resistances like hunters mark does and that they can no longer heal. spirit shroud is an amazing spell and your rage bait has been successful

It does matter if the monster has advantage: if the lowest roll isn't on the silvery barbs roll, it doesn't count. So it's the worst between the best of the first two rolls and the third.
