Great presentation from four years ago. The Oregon bridge that you place in "Astoria" is actually the Waldport bridge, which is quite distinctive and beautiful, but a couple hours south on the Oregon coast.

I was very confused because these aren't called light boxes in the UK, we call them light pads. Great tutorial - I'm learning loads. Thank you.
@Digitalfieldguide2 жыл бұрын
Thanks @30pinkpumkin: yes, the terminology can be a little confusing because of course a "light box" is a modifier used in studio photography. Generally, with light box photography, a light pad refers to the newer LED-style devices, when you say "light box" it could mean that, or something more like a box, like the old slide sorting boxes I started out on. Glad you've enjoyed my video!

Not sure how I missed this incredible presentation since it is almost 2 years (23 months) old, but it just popped up on my KZbin today 🙂 but at the 19:40 mark (and your background image too) I had to look up from Michael's presentation to look at that/his same image hanging on my wall, beside my monitor... Thank you Michael for your inspiration to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, but is under constant attack because of its beauty... Guy I love your analytical approach, it challenges so many personal practices/behaviours and challenges me to live a better existence.... LOVE your Einstein reflection at 33:00.... your (Both Guy & Michael) writing and images has helped me derive meaning from knowledge and guided me to living a more meaningful life.

It has only gone well 1 time in 30 reaching out to an infringer myself. Nothing says you mean business like having an attorney behind you. These people talk crap about me anyway so I might as well get paid for it. Another value to an attorney is David has put a value to my work and photography that I didn’t have a year ago before I started using him. I’m much more of a professional now in the way I run my business.

there are many shades of photographers thats for sure; some are trophy hunters, bagging the iconic grand views but there are some us who do enjoy the process, experience and being there. As you all say, if i capture a image and feel no connection or experience i rarely even look at the end result let alone edit it; I only edit and feel any excitement if the image rekindles the experience of taking it.

Hi! Wonderful informative discusssion. Guy mentioned a book list. Is there a list put together?
@GuyTalPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, Laura! I'll list some books below which we recommend to our workshop participants, having to do with the science and mechanics of visual expression. Still, I wanted to preface this list with a more general recommendation: since meaning is ultimately subjective, having to do with the kind of person you are, your relationship with the places and subjects you photograph, etc., you may well discover deeper meaning and inspiration from researching things that are personally meaningful to you. For example, since Michael and I work largely in desert environments, we find inspiration in books like "The Desert" by John C. Van Dyke. In this vein, we can both rattle off a long list of books that have little to do with photography, and more with the landscapes we work in. With that in mind, these are some of the books we recommend for improving one's creative and expressive skills: - Art and Visual Perception / Rudolf Arnheim - Perception and Imaging / Richard Zakia & James Suler - Feeling Beauty / G. Gabrielle Starr - Picture This / Mollie Bang - The Psychology of Visual Art / George Mather I hope this helps, Guy

very inspiring, thankyou, my maiden name was Davis , do u have relatives in nsw Australia
@Digitalfieldguide3 жыл бұрын
Robyn, you are very welcome. About the relatives in NSW Australia, I am a bit skeptical. I think "Davis" in Australia most likely indicates Welsh ancestry. My paternal ancestors were eastern Europeans displaced in the Holocaust, with a name change towards Anglicization in the immigration process. Although, that said, there were displacements of my relatives---those that survived---all over the world, and we have largely lost touch. My very best wishes, Harold

I've been studying your webinars and they are wonderful. Thanks Phillis and Harold. A few years ago I saw some of your work and read how you did it, but I never caught on to how you post-processed to get such delicate results. I didn't have a light box so I set up a deep picture frame on my scanner and alternated between a black and a white lid. I liked the results but didn't know how to tweak them after. I got a lightbox but had trouble setting up the camera and tripod so I let that area of photography lapse. One scanner shot of a fluffy feather in black 'space' and another of bougainvillea petals 'falling' out of glass were coincidentally pleasing. Your webinars are inspiring me.

Can you recommend some books on mindfulness in photography and the science of visual expression?
@Digitalfieldguide3 жыл бұрын
I've sent this question along to Guy Tal, as I think he might best address it. Also, I do believe there are some of these resources within the webinar video.
@guytal66073 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the interest, Kevin! For a general discussion of Mindfulness I recommend the books of Jon Kabat-Zinn (there are several of them, just type his name into Amazon to help you decide which is best for you). Or, if you prefer a more "down to earth" (humorous, even a little sarcastic) discussion, I recommend Robert Wright's book "Why Buddhism is True" (in case you're worried, he does *not* try to convince you to become a Buddhist, he gives a good review of some of the science of mindfulness and meditation). Visual expression is a much more complex topic, and alas there are no authoritative or complete references about it. If you're curious to understand the reasons (along with some references to relevant books), I recently wrote a 3-part series on this subject on my blog. With Harold's permission, here are links to the 3 articles: guytal.blog/2021/05/27/the-clearest-and-strongest-way-of-seeing-part-i/ guytal.blog/2021/06/08/the-clearest-and-strongest-way-of-seeing-part-ii/ guytal.blog/2021/07/07/the-clearest-and-strongest-way-of-seeing-part-iii/
