Seth, please do a deconstruct video of Melissa Manchester’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud.” I loved your deconstruct on Linda Ronstadt and thought this iconic song/artist/performance would be perfect for your breakdown skills

Still love to go back to this fun chat and performances! Lea will be performing in STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S OLD FRIENDS in LA soon, then the production will have a limited run on Broadway. And later this year Lea will be doing her first musical in Manila, Philippines in six years: playing the Witch in INTO THE WOODS!

I love the high notes she shrieks comedically, it adds this lovely element of... insanity? If that's the right word. It's like the narrator is trying to come across as Julie Andrews, but the shriek adds this unbalanced tone hinting at her obsessiveness.

You are just too cool. In my head, I have deconstructed this lament for decades, they way she expresses her emotions from sadness to rage...all within one breath. You solidified when I always knew and you explained it beautifully. You made my smile & cry. Thank you Seth so much.

Thank you Seth! I’ve always loved his work in Chess. I did not know that was him in Grand Hotel. His heroic tragic end was a shock to me. Your history lesson is much appreciated, but also, I love watching you lip synch because it helps me physicalize how David is manifesting those wonderful tones. THANK YOU!

Technically, most female singing voices are sopanos (or mezzo sopranos, same difference), so I assume you mean you're not a big fan of opera? Or operetta. It's not my favorite singing style, but it can be so beautiful--as Barbara Cook amply proved. Perhaps the obsession with technical perfection is the issue. What's strange about her is that she is pretty nearly perfect in her technique (like I'm qualified to judge), but she's also very soulful and conveys character through song (the gold standard), but I'm not good enough at opera to know who does that when it's Verdi and Puccini as opposed to Gilbert & Sullivan. I only discovered her recently, and her Rodgers & Hart album is one of the few physical CD's I've purchased. Rodgers & Hart standards are performed in a wide variety of styles by a wide variety of singers, and I could never say who is best--but in terms of performing the songs as they were originally intended to be performed, in a theater--nobody could possibly top her. Even though she never appeared in a Rodgers & Hart musical. She's a theatrical soprano, and that's how she later became one of the supreme interpreters of Sondheim--in her memoirs, she says when she first met him, he came out and asked why she never sang any of his stuff. That's how highly regarded she was, and still is.

Judy Garland’s great gift-one of them - was that her singing voice sounded just like her speaking voice. They have that in common.
