So, that's the REAL James River. I live near another river *called* that (even the signs at bridges show that name), but the LEGAL name is "Dakota River" because Congress changed it in an Organic Act in the 1800's. BUT... the Dakotans (North AND South, since it is in both States) kept calling it by its first English name, and most still do today. However, the legal name is the source of the name of some businesses around these parts (e.g. Dakota River Ranch), because some of us know, and like, that UNIQUE name. There are TWO rivers known as "James", but there's only ONE Dakota River. :-)

Thanks Kat. It is pretty, although this year has been slightly off due to dry (and warm) conditions. There's actually still a lot of leaves still on trees.

@SouthernPaddler5 күн бұрын
Awesome!! Other than the mandatory portage at Big Shoals (some do run it), you shouldn't have any issues. I think most of the river camps require reservations, but they all of them are great places to stay! And February is a great time to do this river. Very little boat traffic that time of year. I hope you get to do it and thanks for the kind words!!

Awesome trip Dan, just curious, out of the 3 ozark river ways in missouri which is your favorite? Thanks for bringing us along.
@SouthernPaddler5 күн бұрын
Ha, ha- that's a tough question, Kip! I loved them all so much! Maybe (in order) the current because it has the length to support a 5-day trip and has slightly bigger bluffs than the others. But the remoteness (and beauty) of the JF was incredible (with fun twists and turns) and then just the serenity of the EP was nice. Every one of them are worth a return trip in my book!! :) Thanks, brother!!

I love this river so much. Would love to get up by Cane Bluff again but i think the water is too low this season. 5:49 I LOVE standing! It's not for everyone or every canoe, but in my 17' aluminum tanks, i ride most of the way standing. I do drop down for the class IIs, or a dog leg / strainer so i can stay stable. Just as you said though, feels good to stand up just for a second and pick a line.
@SouthernPaddler18 күн бұрын
This is a fantastic river! I hate we couldn't start at Cane Bluff, but like you said it's been pretty low there for a while. Fortunately, I can stand in my ol' fiberglass Saranac (16ft) too and it's helpful when trying to pick the right line!! :)

If you can ever find just one day, you should float Aker's Ferry to Round Spring on the Current. Get an early start but during the rainy season, this segment is swift and you'll see some AMAZING springs and caves - heck Southern Paddler probably has multiple videos about it.
