This used to be called "Proofing:" Deliberately over-loading a barrel to show it Won't fail and explode.

Mister V, thanks for your comment. I thought proofing had to do with blocking the barrel with ammunition so as to raise the chamber pressure, whereas I'm only using a little aluminum foil to aid in providing a good "Boom". - Steve

@@SHunsader You are not entirely wrong; There's a nice little article about proofing from the NRA onLine: plug "Proofing a gun" into your search engine and it should come up. Of course, proofing in the days of black powder was a bit different, but the goal was the same= a safe-to-use firearm.

Hey, I absolutely love the design you have landed on. I just go the same cannon from Hern and have been trying to find a design for the carriage that does not diminish the size of the barrel. It seems you found that sweet spot where the carriage and barrel complement each other. I am currently working with a local Carpenter and would be interested in having some help figuring out those dimensions. I also wanted to know if you have an angle to your vent hole or if you just did a straight bore. Any help would greatly great appreciated!

@@SHunsader I dont know what a url is, I'm just a long time cannon shooter (1985) & have seen this come up a lot of times. A carronade has an underlug on the bottom of the bbl witch puts tremendous down force on the rear of the carriage. Your gunnade has the older below center trunnions that puts a bit of downforce too. That was fazed out about 1764 to centered trunnions to put the force to the rear not down. I shoot 5 mortars of WW2 style, 2 use bowlingballs, 40mm muzzle & breech loaders, full scale 3" parrott & ordnance rifles that have to share one field carriage & the other ones in a naval truck because it only cost about $50 to make (I scrounged). At least your 6pdr is in a carriage, even a naval truck. My 1/2 scale 6pdr bbl is sitting on a shelf for years with a 1/3 scale sea service. I almost finished a truck for mine but stopped as i realy want field carriages for both, if i only had some oak. I still need a full scale carriage as I've got 3" ordnance & parrott rifles that share one carriage. I made a full scale truck for the ordnance rifle first because it only cost about $50 to build, the field carriage was a hole differant matter. I mostly shoot rifled 40mm's & 3" guns is why i never finished the carriages, that & no oak😊

Thanks for sharing. Would love to see what you've already created. I needed something I could pull around on a hard surface in order to use it, which required being able to pivot one set of wheels. Using a field carriage would have worked, but felt that it was too bulky for me to store.

What is a "Skybox"?
@SHunsader2 жыл бұрын
It's a power inverter which comes as part of a solar system, except it should really be called an 'Energy System'. It allows one to choose where power from Solar, Battery, Grid, and Generator go. Solar can be sent to Grid, Batteries, Load, or combinations of those. When the grid goes down (over the past 25 hours), home runs on battery (and solar when the sun's out), and then finally calls Generator when reserves are low. www.outbackpower.com/products/integrated-systems/skybox

Gus, thanks for inquiring. We installed the railway to address a number of things on our property. 1. To move equipment/supplies in/out of the workshop to/from the driveway. A good example is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnylm6qDltWeaK8 2. We burn wood to keep warm, and have built a number of 'wood cars' to store wood. This keeps me from using a wheelbarrow every other day to get wood on neighbor's property. Seasoned wood is now kept next to the workshop. 3. We've learned that once one has a railway, there are plenty of possibilities. The utility car we were using doubles as an excellent work bench, and when we break ground next year, it'll be very easy to load up the work bench, and roll it onto site. 4. Using rail is a more compact and hidden method of moving things to/from the workshop. Once we've finished landscaping the back yard, it'll be the only way to move heavy things to/from the workshop. 5. Of course, the cool factor. I'm an engineer, and wanted to give it a try. It's cool.

Gus, I think it has something to do with the amount and type of powder, as well as what goes in front of that powder. I'f found that big wads of aluminum foil packed in with the rammer improve the quality of the BOOM. (Called the 'report')
@gracesprocket73402 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a carronade. It is a small bore short gun with a conventional reinforce and muzzle tulip, also with trunnions. The defining features of a carronade are (comparatively) large bore, very tapered form from breech ring to muzzle, with barely any swell at the tulip (if any) and with later models having an extension beyond the tulip, to contain the muzzle cup and to carry the muzzle flash further out from the hull to reduce the risk of firing the port or rigging on the channels. Carronades are also a chambered ordnance, with a reduced diameter of the powder chamber to keep the charge a narrow cylinder rather than a flatter disk (to maintain the proper orientation when rammed - a disk which is rammed edge on, has too much co-volume and shot start occurs impulsively after gas pressure is too high and there is a risk of bursting - this can be avoided by using a fixed ammunition with shot, wad/sabot and powder strapped together and rammed as one. The carronade was also jointed - using a loop under the front of the reinforce to carry a pin between iron cheeks, fitted to a 'slide' - either a long slide on the recoiling principle, or a shorter slide on the 'non-recoil' principle with the front of the lower part of the slide fixed at it's front to the vessel using an iron fighting bolt.
@SHunsader2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! You might need to discuss this with Jack Hern of Hern Ironworks. Here's the link: hernironworks.com/product/u-s-carronade-58-scale/ I spoke to Jack about this barrel last year while giving me the tour of his plant. I seem to remember him mentioning that he reduced the size of the barrel to reduce the risk of what could be stuffed in it (liability, even though we need to sign release of liability forms). Shape wise, seems to be what I've seen in pictures outside of Hern Iron Works.

Wikipedia has a Nice article on Carronades...and they re-inforce what my memory told me -- this is NOT a carronade.
@DavidStrasburg2 ай бұрын
Carronades had a chamber that was one-caliber smaller than the bore; for example, an 18-pounder carronade had its chamber bored equal to a 12-pounder. This reduced the weight of the cannon, but also had the effect of reducing the velocity of the cannonball, and hence range. A factor mitigating the deficiency in range was that carronades could be bored with a much tighter windage than long guns, so that more of the propellant went to moving the shot, rather than bypassing it.[citation needed]
@gracesprocket73402 ай бұрын
@@DavidStrasburg Funny thing tho. Although the carronade has a lower velocity than a gun, and a shorter hitting space than a gun of similar bore at a given range... it is not a short ranged weapon. The range by top line of metal is longer for a carronade than for a gun, because the velocity of roughly 900fps is angled at between 3.5-4 degrees above the sight line.... while the gun with a roughly 1500-1700fps is angled between 1 and 1.5 degrees (higher velocity and lower angles pair). Apex is lower for the flatter firing gun, and the hitting spaces are longer, but the but-en-blanc range for pointed ordnance is longer for the carronade than for either the full gun of the same bore or the smaller gun which stands in the same 'castles' battery. While the carronade is also significantly weaker than the co-calibre gun in terms of penetration... but the smaller guns are equal at around 12pdr gun ~= 32pdr carronade and 9pdr gun much weaker - (The frontal area is also identical for co-calibre and less for smaller guns). Carronades became very significant in the 1820s with the early 'all 32pdr' armament or 'enhanced anncienne' pattern armament (nothing smaller than 18livres), or new 'all 30 livre armament), where all smaller ordnance was entirely replaced by 32pdr carronades, 36 livre or 30 livre caronades - the 120 gun French 3 ponts vaisseaux carrying no fewer than 50 36 livre carronades on the upper deck (replacing 12 livres) and gaillards (replacing 8 livres) - but they were then rapidly squeezed out by the newer medium and light patterns of the standard bore guns. (32 pdr, 30 livres) - a lot of the hostile publicity of the 'better at longer ranges than a 12pdr gun, 32pdr carronade' came about because of resistance to manufacturing new light guns of low weight but better length and velocity - as well as the universality of indexed sights (previously only seen on carronades since 1782). With fewer advantages over alternatives - basically only a modestly reduced weight (17.125cwt, vs 25 cwt for the light gun) - the carronade was the weakest link in the ordnance set, and it's availability in large numbers was a hindrance to replacing it with the newer, better 'carronade like gun' - you don't need the new light 32pdr because you have light 32pdr at home. So Douglas and others exaggerate the weaknesses, mis-state the position of the carronade within it's history and use and then simplified and misunderstood fiction and 'coffee table' histories as well as political apologetics (such as Cpt Porter, caught well inside carronade range crippled by mishandling of the vessel with too much canvas on exiting from under a high shore to windward, and anchored in shallow water with no springs on her cable - she was shot to pieces from a position in which not a carronade could bear - with weasel-words 'could not reach' being used to imply this was an unavoidable range issue. Midshipman Farragut uses the phrase 'brought to bear', Hilyar reports an action from ~800-400yds from the quarter, to which the reply was *mostly* just 12pdr guns in the retreat ports. All three vessels engaged had damage from 32pdr carronade shot, and Cherub was also armed exclusively with carronades - 32pdr and 18pdr on castles. Either she was not an issue in the action, or the engagement was inside carronade range. Another action stated as demonstrating the detrimental effect of carronades is one of the actions on the lakes - where a US squadron carrying substantial numbers of 24pdr and 32pdr long guns, and 32pdr carronades had a range and effectiveness advantage over British ships with a predominant mix of 12 and 9pdr guns and 24pdr carronades. "only 4 24pdr guns could reach" - again, also a question of broadside vs chase and retreat armament as well as the absolute inferiority of the entire British ordnance set.
