I’m actually going through this right now. My wife of 12 years cheated on me and broke me into a million pieces. I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world. We had our first kid and while dealing with postpartum she carried on two relationships over the phone with guys she met online. The basically had video sex. After I found out she begged me to stay and I didn’t even care about what she did. I just wanted my family back. A month after us starting to make it work I found out she had been in contact with the guy and even loaned him money. Now she’s begging on her hands and knees and wants to get rid of all her social media accounts for good. She started drinking but quit and has started getting help. She says she feels so dirty and ashamed. I want to be with her so bad because she’s my whole world. We have a son together and he was a literal miracle baby. My trust is gone. I want to go through her phone which I hate because I’ve never been that guy. I am so broken. I’m 38 but look 25 and had 19 year old girls trying to hook up with me from my school and never cheated. I’m afraid of messing up now because of wanting revenge. Even through I’m the one hurt I just want to hold her and make all the pain go away. I don’t know what to do. My emotions are all over the place. I feel sick at my stomach.

I really find this verse to sum this topic up John 3:3”no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born again”. Someone is born again through faith and filled with the spirit, this is through christ who baptizes us of the spirit and justifies us. WAS ALISTAIR BEGG RIGHT THE FIRST TIME? Alistair Begg has a church member who was the grandmother of a transgender person who was getting married. Begg gave the grandmother this advice: Assuming you have rightly stated to your granddaughter God's and your position on the matter then you can attend the wedding and even bring a gift. Keep in mind that my personal position is thoroughly that homosexual behavior violates God's law, particularly when one is talking about gay marriage. When this story first broke I was among the first jerks to knee jerk that Begg should not have told the woman she could go and add insult to injury by bringing a gift. But was not Begg right in his advice like Jesus appears to be in Matthew 9:9-13? Remember also that Begg is a pastor. So many of his critics could not hold down a pastorate to save their life. Think Jonathan Edwards. Matthew has just been called as a disciple and wishing to spread the good news of the gospel, invites Jesus to his house. Immediately the Pharisees disapprove of Jesus' behavior. Are Begg's critics suggesting that Jesus went to Matthew's house with the intent to show honor or to adopt the sinful sexual and business practices of Matthew's friends? Obviously no to all of the above. Note that Begg was careful to ask the woman if she had properly voiced her opposition to trans marriage and she said she had. Begg then suggested she bring a gift to show that Christians were not heartless toward gay people. The Matthew 9 passage teaches us, inter alia, that Christians must go where the lost are if we are to reach them. We are to "seek and to save". Quickie Bible study group prayers do not do the trick. As one street preacher put it, we must be willing to get our hands dirty. And no, this grandmother was not having the affect on the lost that Jesus did at Matthew's house. Yet by her presence at the wedding she may have been the only sermon these people would see for a long time if ever. Anyway there it is. These comments are here to provoke constructive and meaningful discussion about how close we should get to the lost in trying to reach them for the Gospel. My studied opinion is that the Begg case is a blown call. But I do not think there will be a mad scramble to publicly repent and apologize for any grief the critics have dropped on Begg. Such things seldom happen in this fallen world even among the Redeemed.

Hi John, although this might sound tangential to your line of thinking (and does not easily or completely answer all questions about the relationship between love and glory) I suspect what you are intellectually wrestling with (or resisting?) the contents in Luke 15 (especially verses 8-10 & verse 20 - also in Psalm 139:14 and Genesis 1:31). In the 'parable of the Lost Coin', Jesus says that the coin is _completely_ lost and that its value (to the one to whom it still _fully_ belongs) is _completely_ undiminished. How can that be? It means, I think, that Jesus believes in a (moral) merit/(created) value, distinction. We cannot exaggerate the (moral) 'demerit' of the lost or, it seems, discount their shocking and (again) dramatically undiminished (while being lost and without merit) value to the one they belong - their creator-God. All this seems to combine John Newton's idea ("that saved a _wretch_ like me") with Leonard Cohen's line ("sold my _diamond_ to the pawnshop, but that don't make it junk"). There is no problem with undiminished shame concerning our own moral de-merrit. The problem with 'humility' about our own (created) 'value' is that, in this case, it does not reflect on us (our choices) alone but also on ourselves as _God's_ creation (and therefore on Him, our creator)... Surely in sin I was conceived. _Your_ works are wonderful, I know that full well (but that work is me, first in creation, second in the new birth). In the context of Luke 15 I see a triplicate in overlay. Father creator (Luke 38), Father of Israel (Jer 31:9), Father of the twice born (John 16:27). You can trace the same triplicate through the concept of 'Shepherd' (the lost sheep) or of 'Owner' (the lost coin). Sometimes I worry that your idea of the 'Parable of the Lost Coin' would be a rewrite as 'The Alchemists Parable'. Briefly, an Alchemist is looking for lost led. When he finds it, he rejoices because he can turn it into gold. Tozer put it succinctly when he said of the totality of his human self, "I have nothing to be ashamed of but my sin.". Your statement, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" is no less than historic (He upholds me with his right hand)... yet I suspect the 'dangerous subtleties' you detect in God making much of us are related to this value/merit confusion. Pride is 'what do you have oh man that you did not receive?' but there is no way of being truly loved that does not turn our faces _towards Him_. At the risk of sounding trite, it is a flower towards the sun. So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
