How do you typically run the front and back EQ? Treble....bass.... for each and then pickup pan.
@SebTheSaviour Жыл бұрын
Yup, Growler has an eq for "each coil" when it's basically possible to deal with the mids using selectors. Or even adjusting internally (onboard screws) this bass may be sounding more "traditional") in terms of using bands
@ChrisTromp Жыл бұрын
@@SebTheSaviour Yes, I understand. I'm wondering how you had the treble/bass set for each set of coils and how you were running the mid switches (up,middle,down) in the recording.
@SebTheSaviour Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisTromp as far as I remember I'm mostly using both switches down + all the way up (aka MM SR). But sometimes I put both switches in the middle and dealing with treble

Are you panning more towards the neck coils? How do you have the treble and bass dials set for both sets of coils?
@SebTheSaviour3 жыл бұрын
basically I much prefer the sound of "in the middle". I honestly don't remember the settings of this sample above but I am not a huge fan of "neck" coil if it's not a heavy stuff like metal (Growler doesn't fit well in heavy stuff though because of bartolinis). I hate to be sounding like "bridge" a.k.a "jaco". I set it up like MM - roll on bass+treble and dial up with these switches.
@ChrisTromp3 жыл бұрын
@@SebTheSaviour Looks like you swapped the volume and pan dials with the two treble dials. Based on the position of the white lines it appears you have the treble goosed quite a lot yet your sample doesn't sound crispy or brittle. If I were to center the coils and pan the treble that high (on the rear coils especially) things would be sounding quite brittle. Are your strings quite old?
@SebTheSaviour3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisTromp Definetly were! (because I recorded this sample long time ago though!) :) Honestly, I don't change the strings unless I do studio work or gigs :) I know that it may be a bit disappointing, but this bass sounds well in every way! :)

Hello, thanx! It's funny because at the very beginning this video had many "thumbs down", while it's not a demo of skills or sth, I only wanted to show exactly how many sounds this bass has. Just simply couldn't find any decent demo over the internet for myself, except some poor "roomy" things (like: Andy Irvine always recorded his basses in that way, he's a great guy but personally I don't get such demos!). So I've turned the "thumbs" off and it was drastically changed :) it's a great instrument, really useful in my personal opinion. I sold it to a friend of mine because of the thin neck profile, he says that this Tobias is "for life" to him :) It was the only thing I didn't like in this bass - ergonomically was like a toy (I prefer fatty necks!). Otherwise I would keep it. Sure, it isn't "fender sounding" at all, being rather scoped but always cuts in the mix to me. A great "gospel" sounding instrument imho. Cheers!

Question What are the knobs? I know it’s active with a three band eq, but are the other two knobs a master volume and blend knob?
@SebTheSaviour4 жыл бұрын
It's usual XTBT (as far as I remember) Bartolini 3-band EQ. It has vol+blend/coil tap knob + bass/mid/treble. Switch is 3way position = eq sweep.

What's better. This or the growler one? Nice video btw
@SebTheSaviour5 жыл бұрын
I've always prefered Growler because it's a lightweight bass and inspires me much more overall than this Classic. I much prefer the neck shape. But tbh Classic is just a higher-level bass. It doesn't fit everywhere, whereas Growler is in my opinion a more versatile bass. The Classic fits mostly in a gospel-like generes, ballads etc. It's not gonna fit into heavy stuff. Growler is more rock-o-style bass if you'd like to play ex. metal. It sounds such a MM SR bass but has a another kind of low-mids. Classic will fit if you play in a coverband, when a punchy, versatile bass is needed. It's not versatile like Lakland, but it's attractive. Here's my previous band (they don't play anymore): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKveGqLmd2YoLc where I used an early '96 Growler with Pau Ferro FB. It was strung in G# with 1.50 - 60 custom guage strings. But neither of these basses (Classic or Growler) will not be sounding well paired with the distortion pedal. These bases are not going well with that kind of effects. Cheers!

I just bought one of these Tobias Growler basses in the 5 string version, and will receive it on 2-13-19. This bass should be fun after decades of Fender basses, that I love. Nice playing and really shows the great sound these early Growlers have.
