Headphones are generally tough to compare. Even fractions of a millimetre differences in depth or angle in the ear cause HUGE differences in sound. I would like to hear about some practical on stage experiences too.

Hey Emma! I have Michael Jackson's songs in 5.1, divided into 5 channels, and his music sounds SO MUCH BETTER THAN STEREO, especially the Off the Wall album, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Burn This Disco Out! If you listen to this in 5.1, you will find the stereo version bad!! Also, have a look in the folder for my videos on "Stereo vs Surround." I even uploaded a video here on my channel. In the folder "Audios," you will find original and 5.1 remastered versions. Have fun enjoying the new dimensional world of Michael Jackson. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH-3eaWsg8iSrK8 drive.google.com/drive/folders/10L3vDwsm8EjPfrxuVDwQ5_9y-me-f--j

@ 29:39, not sure who supplies the 'bow!' but the announcement "here's 81 coming up' is the voice of Jerry Hey the horn arranger and leader of the famous 'Hey Horns' that are heard on 1000s of records in the past 4+ decades. 'Off The Wall' was early in the Hey/Q relationship. At the time of this record the horn section was still know as the 'Seawind Horns' as that was the jazz fusion group Jerry Hey, Kim Hutchcroft and Larry Williams were part of prior to settling in L.A. R.I.P Gary Grant (a member of they Hey Horns from day one) We lost Gary this year. :(

Please Richard, Richard. Maybe you can fix those unintended mis-statements. I am sure anyone who knows the music of both Richard and John (of horror-genre film fame) would agree they could not be more different. Other than that the segment is fantastic.

I've been listening to the Carpenters for over 50 years, and i really enjoyed this analysis. But if you want to hear Richard (not John) Carpenter go wild with an arrangement, have you heard "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"?

Man, it feels like Louis is kinda Drummers drummer, if that makes sense. I feel like I can't properly appreciate the skill being put on display. I know it's impressive, I know it sounds amazing, I know it's so cool to watch, but not knowing the technical skill involved really removes me from understanding how crazy it is. I feel like to other drummers he is even better than he is to us laymen.

I got Vic and Bob's 'Shooting Stars' book and CD for Christmas one year. There is a hilarious version of 'Earth Song' Vic does in the club singer style. I can't hear the original in the same way now :D

Definitely check out Guy Pratt’s lockdown lesson of Earth Song, he tells the story of him recording the bass line as well as playing it.

Additionally as you enjoy the gospel choir and his bass parts then check out the stems for Like A Prayer by Madonna which he also played on.

*EDIT* I realised this went as a reply on someone else’s comment 🤦🏻 It was late, I was tired. Moved it to being its own comment! Love this, thank you! Things that struck me… 1) When the track builds I assumed everything did…but it’s mostly carried by Michael’s vocals. The orchestra doesn’t get anywhere near as powerful as I expected! 2) How jazzy some of the orchestra parts were, I expected something more “John Williams” back there. 3) If that was a live piano, not a sample (and it sounds live) the pianist must have been exhausted at the end banging out the chords like that (I’m a pianist myself, so…) 4) I’ve always heard that a good take will carry the rhythm, without a drum part. You can hear the beat so strongly with Michael’s parts and the gospel choir…I was tapping along without realising it. An exception to this is Eddie Van Halen’s solo on beat it. Without backing it sounds all over the place, you can’t tell the rhythm, which is guess is what makes it so insane against the track. 5) And, hell, that bass part!! It always grooved on the track, but hearing it in isolation is incredible. Thanks again!
