So the worst first class experience I had was on the highland cheftain from King’s Cross to Inverness, we only had one cold drink service between London and Newcastle, staff didn’t really come around and there was nobody to complain to about it especially for an 8 hour journey

I imagine Lumo are losing out on a fair amount of revenue by not serving the refreshments until after they check tickets etc. After a couple of trips on which they served the refreshments far too late, I have always taken my own on board. Given the very few stations they call at, usually with plenty of time in between, why don’t they serve the refreshments first?!

I know, I just don’t see them changing that until there’s a strong financial incentive to do so. Their main competition on European routes are the low cost carriers and all the other legacy carriers offer something similar to this in short haul. Club Europe is often fully booked in its current form and they have the ability to increase the business cabin by moving the divider back which they wouldn’t be able to do if they got rid of the middle seat.

Nice video, I enjoyed it - thanks. I'll use First Class on a rail service when, like you, I can tell myself that the extra cost is money I'd probably spend anyway on refreshments. Alternatively, if I'm going on an actual holiday - I've had a couple of memorable trips in 1st Class on LNER from York to Inverness which were great fun. Living in Sheffield there aren't actually any open access operators available to me - I've got to get over to Doncaster for Hull Trains or Grand Central. I have sometimes used one of them in the morning on the way to London and then EMR direct to Sheffield coming back.

Rail experts would agree. I understand that LNER's standard class seats were specified by the DfT (as were those fitted to GWR's bi-mode trains). Note that these trains are almost identical except, obviously, the livery and whether they are pure electric (Lumo for example) or bi-mode. Lumo is 'open access' and part of First Group which had the freedom to specify Lumo's seating which is more comfortable.

As you’re aiming to return from a different airport you would need to call up to make the booking if you want these to be part of the same booking rather than just two one way bookings. However, you can have a look online to search for availability before making the call. You would just need to search two one way bookings when looking for availability online.

I didn’t spend £8k specifically to get Gold. I got Gold primarily because I spent £8k on trips I wanted to take and as a result earned status. When you travel a lot the value of unlimited food and drink in nice lounges especially if you have a long connection, plus getting better seat selection and occasional upgrades and better customer service can be very valuable. Definitely won’t give value to everyone though!

You clearly are becoming very versed on the intricacies of AVIOS these days. Could I ask a favour Charles. A lot of experienced AVIOS collectors redeem flights that start in destinations outside the UK, to save money on taxes/surcharges as long as there is 24 hours difference between the flight to that connecting city. Would you mind doing a video explaining this in more detail please, and the optimal cities to do such trips. Eg Dublin for the US, and say a city in Europe for travel to Asia. Thanks mate, keep up the good work. I may be flying up to Newcastle in a few weeks for the Arsenal game, lets hope its not as fiery as last season!

Very interesting and you make it sound so simple. I have literally spent fruitless days trawling through the BA and Qatar Airways sites day by day trying to find flights even when I am extremely flexible on dates. As you commented it is very quite easy to find flights to the US, but I have found it near impossible to find flights going east. I admit that I have not searched just as the reward flights are released although I am uncomfortable booking an outward flight and then not getting the return flight but I suppose reward flights can be cancelled for a small fee. I note your comment towards the end of your video about booking trips with several legs which you said did not show up on a website. If that is the case, how do you know that there is reward availability?
@charlesontravels
@charlesontravels 10 күн бұрын
I think specifically if searching with BA they don’t have the best route network East at the moment and the flights are very popular to book with flights so they can be a bit difficult, but I’ve lots of luck searching with Qatar! Booking the day the flights are released is definitely the best chance you have to book them and the cancellation fees are so low that I do think it’s worth the risk of not being able to find an available flight home. Never had to do that personally though, the flight home has always been there. For multiple legs I’ve just searched the individual legs separately first. For example, if I know I need to first connect to Doha, I’ll search for flights from Doha first, then see if I can get the flight out to there.

This can vary massively depending on the route and dates of travel. I’ve seen times where there has been a very small price difference and I’ve seen it be thousands of pounds difference. I am completely new to all the points. And wondered if you could give me some advice. The next two holidays planned as a solo traveller would be to Australia and New York- but no time soon. Wondering if avios could help me get there? Though some of the rules might mean no availability etc. As a school teacher I don't have a lot of flexibility with flying dates. And not sure if I would hit the new spend limit for BA? Should I look at barcley card or another Amex? Or just look to another cash back options or the new offering of yonder?
@charlesontravels
@charlesontravels 17 күн бұрын
New York is a very easy one to get to with points, always lots of business class availability and occasional first class due to the high number of daily flights. Both the BA Amex and Barclaycard vouchers would halve the number of avios you’d need for business class. Main advantage of the Amex over the Barclaycard is that the Amex voucher opens up additional availability and can also be used on first class unlike the Barclaycard voucher. That extra availability might be useful for you if you’ll always be travelling in school hols. But obviously that’s no help if you won’t comfortably hit the spend limit, so the Barclaycard could work. Getting availability for Australia can be a challenge though. I’ve got a video coming out very soon focusing on how to find and book flights with avios, so hopefully that one will be helpful for you.

Last year I had a day trip to Durham from Newcastle and having never been on a CrossCountry train decided to book advance tickets with them. The train there was jam-packed and somebody was in my reserved seat. I just sat somewhere else, after all, it was only a 15 minute journey. If I had been asked to move I would have done. The train arrived at Durham and there seemed to be folk everywhere .. some sitting on the floor and a couple of passengers were even sitting on the luggage rack. It was going to be a long journey to Plymouth for some. Somehow, I had actually booked an anytime return ticket, so I was able to come back on any train. I had a great day in Durham then made my way to the station. A TransPennine Express train turned up, a company I had heard bad things about. It was empty, clean and bang on time. So my marks are XC 4/10, TPE 10/10

I think they used to offer food on journeys over 60 minutes. My wife and I travelled from York to Newcastle a few months ago and were looking forward to our meal, from the LNER 'Dine' menu. Sadly it never came. A cold drink and a cuppa were all we were offered.
