He played this on SNL in the 70s (replacing the Sex Pistols who had passport problems) but he got banned from SNL (and CBS who own a few radio stations) until this triumphant return to play the same song with The Beastie Boys on SNL in 1999.

A great song by Charles Aznavour. But Elvis sings it very poorly. He has no voice no emotion matching reflecting the song. He. Better never get close to it. If he could only understand how horrible his singing is.

I was the production designer on this show. We had a total blast......most of it.....not all....but most was shot off the cuff. Lovely band. A real smile.

Apparently it’s an Elvis Presley song that Chet did a jazz version of. I haven’t checked if that’s true, just a comment I read on KZbin

Elvis, I'm a long-time fan. I've got 24 CDs! I love most of them, so I'm not a hater. But I gotta be honest. I may be old (71) but this music sounds old and tired. I saw your appearance on Colbert. The star of that performance was the lady playing slide guitar. The rest of you guys were just not interesting. This is not a sound I wish to remember for Elvis Costello. Sorry!

I have to agree - this will be the first cd I'm going to pass on from Elvis, and I've been buying his music since My Aim Is True

It doesn't do much for me and I've been a fan since the late seventies. It's formulaic and badly mixed, unless they were aiming for (and missed) an 'authentic' sound. Don't worry guys. We all have bad days. Back to the old stuff for me.
