You mentioned an archaic fuction that is no longer a problem in modern televisions. I think it was the equalizer pulses in the vertical sync pulse. Can it be eliminated in modern televisons?
@videolabguy16 күн бұрын
Great question. But, no. Even though the analog signal is immediately digitized, the equalizers and serrations are necessary for the sync processor to get the interlace cadence correct. That is, to properly identify field one and field two by counting the pulses. From that, the down stream de-interlacer process can work properly.

Hello videolabguy (I don't know your first name). I love your channel and your website. I am an electronics engineer like you (I have my modest little KZbin channel) and for about a month I have been thinking about the design of a mechanical television. I think I can do it alone on the sync part and control of the power LEDs (I have my own diagrams in mind). On the other hand, I would like a television without a camera initially and so I am looking to obtain video files in mechanical TV format. I think that the most common current standard is based on the 32-hole Nipkow disk. Can you please give me links where I can get such video files. If you have any advice to give me for the motor and its disc support I am also interested (speed, diameter). I clearly saw that your preference for speed control was towards an analog control and a servo on the video frequency with a CD4044 PLL, there is surely a reason linked to your experience on this choice rather than a PWM signal I I'm a little suspicious of the reason but I would like to hear from you on the subject. For the design of the disc and for manufacturing it I also have my own idea in mind which I will share if it works.

Hello VIDEOLABGUY, thank you very much for your videos, I am about to make myself a mechanical television, I did not understand the role of RV4, R20 and R22 on Q4 in the SPEED SET function, ok Q4 probably receives a PWM signal on G but what is the role of RV4
@videolabguy3 ай бұрын
These components form the negative feedback loop of the motor drive amplifier. The forward voltage comes from the 4046 phase detector and is summed with the feedback from RV4 at the node of R19 and R20. You adjust RV4 to get a balanced control response in the feedback loop. If your disk is lighter, the control voltage has a faster effect than if the disk is heavier. This is the nature of closed loop systems. As you tune your system, pay attention to R23. You will have to fiddle with this resistor's value depending on the strength of your particular motor and the mass of your disk. Good luck! Have fun! If you want to go deeper, study a topic called PID loops. "Proportional Integral Derivative".

Do these cameras only power on with their specific power supply and control box? I tried to plug it in using a power supply meant for cameras with the 10-pin plug and got no juice from the camera whatsoever. I assume I need to use that specific power supply or I wasted more money gambling on eBay.
@videolabguy6 ай бұрын
They can be confusing. The power supply is also the sync generator, color processor, and NTSC encoder. That they used the same 10 pin camera connector on the camera head was not wise. The camera head sends "prevideo" down the cable and it absolutely must receive sync from the CCU in order to operate.

Nice video, just subscribed :) Identifying mystery parts/components is always fun. Btw. If you have a CRT with no visible burn-in, you can use a blacklight in a dark room to make them visible since it will brightly light up the phosphor of the screen, making even the slightest burn-in show up. I don't know if this works with every CRT since I've only tested it on the CRT of my Commodore PET, but there it worked like a charm, making burn-in visible that was otherwise completely invisible to the naked eye even with the PET running. Just a little trick (but you probably knew this one already)
@videolabguy6 ай бұрын
Yes. I use my UV light to partially identify phosphors. It does not work for all of them. Some, like P1 and P11, do not fluoresce under UV. P31 is particularly beautiful, though. I tried the UV on this tube and it did not make the burns stand out any better. But, your point is very valid.

do you know what the fast scan Cinch Jones connector on the model 80 camera is? Is it regular composite video or y/c?
@videolabguy7 ай бұрын
The signals, by pin number, on the 4 pin connector are: 1. Baseband video (no sync), 2. Vert. Sync, 3. Horizontal Sync, 4. Ground - In the big 12 pin collector the FM modulated SSTV signal is on pin 12. The scanning frequencies are 4,000 Hz for horizontal scan and 15 Hz for vertical scan. NOT standard video compatible. Should be able to make an adapter circuit for an o'scope though.

Hey!! I'm about to buy a Sony AVC-3400 portapak and have a big question!! The seller sayd it powers on but when they press any of the buttons, the machine just makes a clicking sound.. Do you think that's because there is no tape in the machine??
@videolabguy7 ай бұрын
That is quite likely. There is a mechanical sensor (wire) between the scanner and the fixed heads that has to be pushed back to enable the deck to engage. Be aware, these machine are notorious for having open main motors. The brushes are pressed to the commutator by foam rubber pads. These pads have turned to snot. If you are up to the task, it's not too hard to pull the bottom off the motor and replace the pads. If you get it the machine, contact me through my web site and I will provide you with a full set of service manuals (PDF).

very interesting, & detailed. Wish you had been my electronics instructor back in the 1990s. Though i do have a question: How low of a scan rate can it go, to say produce maybe 5 pictures (frames) a second over the usual 30 ? There is a group called narrow band tv, and was wondering if this would work for that purpose?
@videolabguy8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Good ideas there. See my NBTV series of videos. It would not be practical to convert one of these Sony cameras to a scan rate that low. The high voltage powers supplies for the camera and viewfinder are intimately coupled to the horizontal deflection and won't work at any other frequency. It would be best to build the camera from the ground up for that purpose. I based this conclusion on slowing down the frame (field) rate from 60Hz to 5Hz and the horizontal the same amount to create a 525 line, 5Hz refresh rate system. The flicker would be unbearable. Though it would work. Computer processing with frame rate upscaling could make it work too. But, in that case, there's mpeg. As for NBTV, the frame rate is 12.5 frames per second and the line rate is 400 Hz. The picture is made up of 32 lines. Bandwidth is about 13 to 14KHz. In my system I clocked pixels from memory at 27.2 KHz to get more detail per line. (64 active pixels per line) You may also want to watch my Philocam series to see how involved designing a video camera system from scratch can be. That one runs at 15Hz frame rate with 267 lines. When I built the camera, I included a frame buffer with 8 built in images for testing the monitor before the camera tube was making pictures. The frame buffer memory was part of the sync generator and made development faster and "easier". (There was nothing easy about it!) The proper process for designing a TV system is to work from the display backwards to the camera. Here is my NBTV signal generator project: www.labguysworld.com/NBTV_10-4_Eleanor_001.htm
