A thin coat of refined linseed oil to “oil out” is the only necessary step before a coat of varnish.

But HOW???? 😊

I have an oil painting where I created the mixture of 50/50 Galkyd Lite and Gamsol, as suggested. I added a layer of this to my finished painting (oil on cotton canvas) but now the whole thing looks very reflective and glossy (after letting it dry for several days), almost as if I had applied a high-gloss varnish to it. So now I'm going to try applying a matte varnish over this to see if it helps. Takeaway - make sure that your 'oiling out' layer is VERY thin before letting it dry. My painting isn't ruined, but it's also more reflective than expected.

Yes, this is a good tip for everyone! The thinner, the better. I hope your painting turns out just how you wanted with the matte varnish added.

@ Yeah the matte varnish did help reduce the glare for sure! Looks better now

Great presentation and really nice painting. I do wood and resin art and have been thinking about experimenting with adding more art flare on some pieces versus just a resin table or tray. Thank you for the info and inspiration!

How did you reproduce the painting? 1. Did you take a photograph of it, edit the colors to match the original, reduce its size in photoshop, illustrator, etc. , and then print it? 2. Or did you scan the painting and print it directly? If you scanned it, how did you adjust the size?
@ArtByCedar3 ай бұрын
I took a high-res photo of the original. Yes, I make sure colors are accurate and crop the photo in Photoshop. You don't need to resize it smaller for the print. Higher res will actually give you a better print quality. You set the size of the print in the printer settings. (I have a professional print shop that makes my larger prints for me--I just send them the high res image.)

It would still be a no for me. It's your IP. I say if you want an NFT of your art, don't give someone else control over it at all. Just mint it yourself, then have them buy the NFT from you if they want it so bad! My 2c.

@@bentalreja I hear you. But maybe look at it this way, your art is getting seen because that’s how the scammers found you in the first place. So keep going, something is working. I feel like it falls in the same category as there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Doesn’t the hardware scratch the wall and the canvas doesn’t like flat against the wall?
@ArtByCedar6 ай бұрын
Yeah, if you use this kind, the painting won't be *perfectly* flush against the wall, but it's such a small gap, it's honestly not noticeable. We're talking 1/8" or less. This won't be at all noticable with a large painting. (And for a small painting, you'd use the little screw-in eyes that go on the inside.) I've never seen hanging hardware leave any kind of mark against a wall, so I wouldn't worry about that at all. They do make hanging hardware that is shaped to be inset, inside the edges of the stretchers, and those are pretty cool, but a little harder to find. Google "Flat Mount D-ring Picture Hangers" to check out the options. Even those aren't going to be perfectly flat, but pretty close.

Beautiful commission. Can I ask two things , firstly do you use any mediums when applying your acrylics ,secondly what do you use to protect the finished art work , ie varnish ? If so is there one that you could recommend. I normally use liquitex medium / varnish . Thank you for sharing this . I have just been given a lovely piece of live edge wood which when I look at it it’s rather intimidating.
@ArtByCedar7 ай бұрын
@soniabrickell4268 Yes, I mix a variety of Golden acrylic mediums into my paints, some for thick texture, some for thin glazing. They're all fine to use together, so feel free to experiment in your paintings. It won't mess anything up. I believe for this piece, I finished it with an isolation coat, a coat of Golden UV top coat, and finally, a coat of Gamvar gloss. That being said, Liquitex varnish is great! 👍

Give it a day or two. If you're in a hot or dry climate, it will dry quicker.
