It would have been smarter to have a short speech before starting to play the anthem. In the speech the designated cadet commander would have said 'Any man that feels in any way unable to sing the anthem for any reason can step aside. However I make an appeal to your honour to not disrupt in any way the ones who do desire to sing it once its started.' Basically if anyone did try to disrupt it he would have acted in a dishonorable way. Honor and proper gentlemanly behaviour were big back then.

The inclusion of "Rock of Ages" is a subtle nod towards Stuart as it was Stuart's favorite hymn. When he was mortally wounded, he requested those with him on his death bed sing this hymn.

In this scene in the movie, everybody just heard a muffling loud blast and explosion coming from all the way over there after The Lone Ranger and Tonto were secretly blowing up the bridge. Nothing to consider and worry about when they thought they were digging and took up a new hobby and new purpose in life tunneling for supply routes and figure out the true real meaning and discovery about what's best.
