It's actually not specified that Goku planned to jump to Frieza's ship. It's likely Goku would have waited until Frieza landed or was trying to jump, but couldn't get a lock on Frieza's energy quick enough due to the ship's speed and being new to the technique. Either way, Goku ultimately didn't bother because he dedected Trunks and felt Frieza's power dissipate. In either case, it could also be likely that Cell came from the timeline when Trunks first arrived, meaning that Cell would have Frieza's DNA regardless. Now imagine a timeline where he didn't have Frieza in him?

It's likely that deep down Vegeta did care, but he refused to ever show it to anyone, probably deciding his efforts were better spent at getting strong enough to destroy Frieza. It was his single minded focus on that that made him so ruthless, to the point he was apathetic to Raditz's fate and discarded Nappa because he believed that the crippled saiyan would just hold him back on his goal of defeating the tyrant. But when he realized he could never beat Frieza (during Namek saga at least), he allowed his guard to fully drop to express his remorse to the only (full-blooded) saiyan left alive. And since Vegeta was meant to be permanently dead after this, it would have been a final send off for him. Thankfully, the editors convinced Toriyama to bring him back, though this came at the expense of him doubling down on his pride and arrogance during the Android/Cell saga.

I do like that at least with the DBS Broly movie, they attempted to reconcile aspects of both the Bardock special and DB Minus. It certainly was nice to make this DLC a faithful adaptation of the original special, though it is a little sad that meant we didn't get Gine.
