Tim, Im looking for a wiring diagram to make and SFD1001 to C=64 cable or outright purchase one. Do you have any suggestions other than Ebay? Do you or anyone have the schematic for the cable?
@TimsRetroCorner4 күн бұрын
There's a device called the OneBus from Chipitos.be (I think it's a build it yourself project) that converts between IEEE-488 and IEC Serial and Plus/4 'paddle'. It will only run at the speed of the slowest bus (ie it'll be as slow as an unaccelerated 1541). Or you'd need an IEE-488 cartridge for the C64. There are a few of those floating about, plus there's schematics on Zimmers. But it's not going to be as simple as "a cable".

Tim, i need your advice with a Plus 4 that has RAM problems which i picked up from that well known auction webiste lol. The computer switches on no problem and is picture perfect but After about 5 minutes of it powered on though i start getting charactors on my screen (letters, numbers and symbels) and have been told by quite a few group members of a F/B group for the C16 & Plus 4's that it's likely down to a faulty RAM chip. I have purchased a full set of 8x Plus 4 RAM chips and i want to replace all 8x on this board. My problem is that i don't own a de-soldering suction gun station but i do have a "Hot air & soldering iron" station and i also have a De-solder sucker that you plug in a wall socket for it to heat up. How can i de-solder the RAM chips off this Plus 4 board without causing any damage to the through-hole via's by using the 2x tools that i have please bud ?
@TimsRetroCorner14 күн бұрын
I've never used a plug-in solder sucker, but I gather they work in much the same way as a moo gun. It's just that instead of an electric suction pump they rely on a mechanical piston and spring, like a regular solder sucker. So just arm the solder sucker, apply the hot end to the joint, then the solder heat up and then press the button. Repeat until the chip is done. If the chip doesn't come straight out, apply gentle pressure with a small flat blade screwdriver. You may need to apply hot air to help (at, say 350C). be careful not to overheat the PCB or you may delaminate it. It might help to place the board in a vice if using the hot air gun, otherwise you'll need 3 hands! Always best to practice first on a scrap board if you have one.

The daughter board upgrades to the WD1770 disc controller, which is necessary if you want to use ADFS and 3.5'' drives. The "ashtray" on the keyboard originally housed a socket for PHROM (phrase ROM) expansions for the speech synthesis upgrade but that was quickly rendered obsolete by phoneme-based speech software that effectively had unlimited vocabulary. Later, it was used for third party sideways ROM socket add-ons or for hiding old chewing gum.

Upon a further rewatch, that switch would have been a DIY addition as the speaker can be pretty loud at times, and not many games or programs offered the ability to turn it down. The internal 3.5" drive would also have been a DIY addition, especially considering the BBC Micro and Master mainly used 5 1/4" discs. Said drive would have plugged into the connectors under the machine with an additional power cord, also connected to the computer and drew power from that.
@TimsRetroCorner23 күн бұрын
I can't think of anything else that switch could be for. But it's a pretty overkill switch for it! (and I'd personally have put it in the ashtray cover plate, unless that had already been knocked out...) I'm gonna keep the floppy drive there (or at least "a" floppy drive that's maybe less gunked up). Need to research if BBC drives need a mod (like Amiga drives do). There's a whopping big hole in the side so I might as well fill it! The drive power lead was soldered directly to the motherboard spade terminals! The USB C power supply I have fitted at the moment doesn't have aux power out, so there's that. Previous owner fitted a floppy passthrough connector on the back, so adding a second drive (or gotek) is an option.

Shame it was mutilated although some would say modded. Also never really seen a psu fail and that small one was crazy 🤪. I'd have checked the voltage on the regulators. See if ya voltage going in etc. But nice video half ya got it working I had these at school ad my main computers so I remember them well which is why I've a shed full lol 😂
@TimsRetroCornerАй бұрын
I'm becoming a bit of a fan of little USB PSUs - they're pretty versatile, and with Power Delivery, can supply up to 20 volts! The downside - at least with this one - is no square plug passthrough. So any peripherals that need to plug into that for power will be out of luck. Of course, I still plan to fix the original PSU.
@robbyxp1Ай бұрын
I've never seen a beeb that mutilated with a disk drive on the side. All disks in BBC land until very late were 5 1/4, so it would have been of not much use at the time. I had a BBC, and it was by far the most expandable, and the best platform to learn BASIC and assembler on, computer available in its prime. It also had a proper OS which a lot of competitors did not have. And there was tons of add ons boards you could buy to make it even better (which unfortunately you don't have in there). Another great video.
@robbyxp1Ай бұрын
You need the keyboard attached for it to boot, as you found out.
@TimsRetroCornerАй бұрын
I guess the original owner had a use case that involved 3.5" disks. Or maybe he just really wanted an Amiga 500, lol. Plus an object lesson on why we need to ask "why are there no photos showing the right side of the case?" when buying from ebay. Still, I shall have fun investigating the range of add on boards, and whether they'll fit with that frankenfloppy in place.....

Hi again Tim. Just an update with this Plus 4 i picked up/won on that world famous auction website we all know lol. Have donated my CPU and TED chips from my working Commodore 16 computer and put them in the Plus 4, powers up brilliant ( both the TED & CPU have 5mm heatsinks on them running the length of the chips btw) The replacement TED i have just purchased arrived this morning so i popped that straight in the Plus 4 and it's working as it should. All i've left to do is await the modern day C16 & Plus 4 CPU kit to arrive get my soldering out to assemble the kit and pop that in my C16. This Plus 4 did had 5 metal pins on the keyboard ribbon cable that had came away/detached from the plastic, so i used just a tiny amount of super glue and stuck them back.
@TimsRetroCornerАй бұрын
Excellent, that's good news. Hope you get a lot of fun out of the Plus/4. :)

Hiya Tim, i've just won and collected an "Untested" Plus 4 from over on Ebay but is has the following problems when i got it home to test. The first problem is that the computer will not switch off and stays permanently On (with the Plus 4's power light permanently stays lit. The power switch moves from On & Off and Off & On no problem at all though. The other problem it's got is that all i'm getting on my monitor screen is "No Signal" even though my Commodore 16 connected via AV Composite works flawless on the same monitor. I don't really won't to go swapping chips from my C16 into this Plus 4 just incase it might damage them and render my C16 "Knackered" lol Was wondering if you could offer any information or help to get this Plus 4 working. Thank you ever so much :)
@TimsRetroCornerАй бұрын
First problem sounds like the power switch. If you're careful you can open it slightly and get some contact cleaner inside it (if you take it fully apart, be careful not to lose the tiny spring pin like I did!). You can get replacements but they're hard to find (and the one I found was too short) Most likely failures for a black screen is the CPU and TED, in that order. You can put those chips in your C16 one at a time and see if it stops working, doing that won't damage it. (out of 5 machines I had 4 dead CPUs and 1 dead TED). Ted chips are easy to get hold of, but CPUs are expensive. There are alternatives though, and I've tried some of them on the channel.
@scouse1967Ай бұрын
@@TimsRetroCorner Hiya Tim and thank you so much for your reply to my comment to you. I sorted out the Plus 4's power switch by spraying contact cleaner inside it and rocking the switch on & off, off & on over 20 times and that seems to have done the trick as now the computer powers off properly. I tested both the CPU and then the TED chip from the Plus 4 board on my working C16, here's the results of testing them one at a time. Plus 4 CPU on my C16 board= Black screen Plus 4 TED on my C16 board= No Signal on my screen. So both chips i reckon are dead. I have purchased a replacement TED chip from that well known auction website (listed as tested and working) but just can't find a replacement CPU chip at all :( :( :( I know there are modern day replacement CPU's (C64 one's) so i reckon it's going to have to be one of them that i'll purchase to put put in this Plus 4 board. Love your videos btw, keep them coming please sir :) :) :)
