It is very tragic what Bart said about paying your dues in the sport makes a big difference in the scoring in the finals. It should be the routine at that moment. The scoring was so unfair here.

One of the most regrettable losses in gymnastics history is the removal of compulsory routines from the Olympics. Compulsories were the only way to truly compare gymnasts, as everyone performed the same routine, allowing technical skill, execution, and artistry to shine above all else. Watching the compulsory floor routines from the 1988 Olympics, it’s clear to me that Daniela Silivas was superior and should have been the Olympic champion. Her performance here was flawless-she embodied perfection in every detail. Ironically, this compulsory floor routine was developed by the Soviets, theoretically giving them an advantage. However, the Romanians, and particularly Silivas, elevated it further with their artistry and precision, including intricate hand movements and superior execution. By contrast, both Soviets (Shushunova and Boguinskaya) failed to fully complete their leaps, which should have been reflected in their scores. Outside of Silivas, the second-best performance in my view was Brandy Johnson. Her leaps were outstanding, better even than Phoebe Mills, yet the political judging of the time prevented her from scoring in the 9.9 range. Mills benefited from performing later in the lineup, which often skewed scores higher. Silivas was on a completely different level-her routine was a masterclass in both technical execution and artistry. This performance alone underscores why she deserved to stand at the top of the podium.

Much better than any of the routines you see today or in the past 10 years. Gymnastics was waaaay better before as well as the gymnasts themselves and the dance and routines. Now it’s a circus and really not even the same sport. 😢

I just wonder, for a gymnast who struggled sooo much mentally when it came to individual glory (she was a team comp rock), how different it would be in a time where she wasn't an anomaly and judges had started acknowledging different body types. I can only imagine what that might have done for her to have existed during a normalvy of confident young black women gymnasts.

If only Silivas didn’t have that wobble on that turn…. I like Shushunova, she was a powerhouse and a very exciting gymnast to watch, but I always felt that Silivas had better form and was more polished, the complete package. By the time of the floor final they both seemed like they were a bit burnt out. I also don’t understand how Shushunova scored so well on compulsory floor, I am thinking mostly about 1987 worlds. There is amateur footage available, Silivas’s 10 on compulsory floor was well deserved but there were other girls whose Comp. FX were superior to Shushunova’s.

sorry but in this era that valued execution so much Shusho's bars didn't deserved the 9.9. actualy not only Silivas but many other girls in the comp had better flow and lines on the UB than Shusho, she alwas seemed to be "muscleling" things up way too much and was on the verge of breaking form, way too close actually to be simply ignored by the judges

Not sure how Shushunova earned a .025 higher than Silivas. I don't see it.
@worldartgym9 күн бұрын
Shushunova scored 3 9.9s and one counting 10 for a 9.925 average. Silivas scored all 9.9s. In the all-around finals, the judges could not throw a 9.95 (however they could in event finals) so Silivas had a larger wobble, but one judge ignored Shushunova’s landing and still called it perfect.

Nadia Comaneci (Montreal 1976) and Daniela Silivaș (Seoul 1988) each scored perfect 10s on all occasions they performed on the uneven bars (team optionals, team final, all-around, and event final) during those games, for a total of four perfect scores each. They are the only gymnasts in Olympic history to achieve a perfect 10 in all four performances on the same apparatus at the same Games-a record unlikely to ever be surpassed under the current scoring system.

Elena Shoushenova was the world Champion at that point. I believe that she was 19 and Daniella Silivas was 18. Daniella obviously a protege of Bela Karolye and Rumanian . Elena was very near retirement and at worst she would only have had to contend with the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Possibly at Seoul the judging panel had the addition of Nelly Kim ; a previous top scorer for the Soviet Union: There are pics of Elena and possibly her boyfriend and maybe chaperone in a major city in Russia: I hope she packed as much as she could into her criminally short life.
