Thank you very much for a very honest and unbiased critique. That was the answer. I was hoping for, but wouldn’t have been surprised if that wasn’t the case.

The UAD 2254 completed fucked the timing of the different drum elements compared to dry and hardware

Thank you for this video, very illustrative! I’m listening in my studio with Adam monitors, and from here I can perceive the loss of ambiance in all the plugins. The Overloud plugin recovers it very well by increasing the saturation, which is interesting. UAD colors the high-end too much and adds so much saturation that it throws the sound right in your face, completely losing the room. Waves, in my opinion, is the most transparent, but it loses all the ambiance. Black Rooster… what can I say, nothing about the plugin-it’s completely useless. I stopped paying attention to this company years ago because when I installed some demos, it erased my plugin registry, and Logic Pro X (back in 2019) took at least 40 minutes to reorganize everything. As far as I’m concerned, that company might as well not exist. These tests are definitely interesting, and I’m quite surprised by Overloud. Thank you very much, greetings from El Salvador!

I'm looking for the best 1176 clone and was thinking of getting the Purple Audio MC77. I've heard that it can sound harsh. Is that true? What are your experiences with the unit?

I've been researching the early Bob Marley recordings, it's said that on Burnin' he used a U67 for lead and U87 for BV's - do you think the WA-67 is a good choice for my small home studio to get close to his sound? I've been collecting classic dynamics, SM57, M88, M201, MD 421 and Senny MD441 I've recently ordered, I also have a WA47 and Avantone CV12 here

Additional thought: the compression action on uad, slate and overloud sound closest to your hardware, in how the low string notes are grabbed etc.

Elam 251 sounds the best. No competition. Has that warm wrap around bottom end with not too bright high end that all the others lack. The vintage Elam is out of my price range, but I wouldn't buy the other ptetenders either. I would test out other mics like the AKG and Austrian oc818 or similer, that have nice bottom end and smoother top end. The problem with some of the clone or pretender mics is, they very often push the price up because they are pretending to be in the same ball park as the vintage, and they are not at all. Where if you buy a mic with similer sound that isn't pretending to be any particular mic, they can be good at a reasonable price imo.

The elam 251 is the best. Warm audio is decent but would need some extra effort to make it similar. I'm listening on good sennheiser headphones with an audio amplifier so it's very clear.

The Neumann is a bit darker which a lot of people like better. The Warm Audio is definitely brighter all around. It might just be the enclosure making that difference, lol. *shrug*

Hi, I'd really love you to look at the Microtech Gefell M92.1s. I'm currently getting to work with one and there aren't many comparison or review videos about it so I was wondering how you would feel about it. ;) From what I can tell, it's not quite the allrounder, but i did like it on various kinds of acoustic guitars and vocals that don't need to cut through a busy mix.

I think with the acoustic guitar the mic placement was kind of an influence. I'd argue the ELAM was just at the sweet spot and the other microphones sounded just as you would expect from that little difference in position: The C24 - a little thinner, more wood - because slightly more from above The MP12 - a little more mud - because closer to the sound hole The WA251 - less body and more annoying strum noise - because slightly more towards the fret board Also I think on vocals the ELAM was the best at dealing with the room acoustics. On the WA251 I was the most distracted by how your room was responding to the singer. Hot take: if you combine the ELAM with a Neve 73, you might come close to the sound of the C24.. :)

Are there any spectrograms comparing these mics that you've made? Would love to see how the WA compares there tbh, as I couldnt hear what you were describing (might be a language thing)... I got what you said about the '24, that thing is amazing.

B58 is better in my opion. I think the Senheisers are too boomy and bright. By the time you eq the boominess out of them they're gonna sound thin. I would rather add a little high end with the Shure. Ive had great luck live with Shure. I think the best Shure is the SM86 Cardioid Condensor. It says Award winning Vocal Microphone on the box. So it must be known. Ive been singing almost 40 years and just discovered it a couple years ago . But i love it. I like it better than the Beta 87A Its my favorite live mic now. I sound a lot like Geddy Lee and its perfect for my voice.

Nobody does better comparisons than you your subtle humor makes these so much more enjoyable to watch. 😄 I listened again with my headphones sounds a lot different than on my monitors and I have the Arc system from IK Multimedia on my monitors. Listened on my Focals, the ELAM is definitely the winner the C24 next and I like the MP the WA sounds a bit harsh but with a little EQ I think it would work. I didnt like it on the acoustic but I really think if the WA was positioned closer to the body it would be better. Again I think with eq it could be a good sounding mic. We are talking roughly an 11 thousand dollar difference .You convinced me to buy the WA67 for my vocals. They got a LOT closer with that one. But I agree, why so shiny? I'd love to hear some of your finished projects. Your have some beautiful hardware my friend. . Thanks for the info.

Great Comparison Video and truly appreciate the time you and $ you put into this. I feel real bad for the Softube test, unfortunately there was some User Error in the demonstration. There is a DRY signal pot the works like a MIX knob/pot. When it’s on DRY you will not hear the effect/compression.

Is it hard to get into running a studio like you do? I'm wanting to work with bands, even do live sound. I have enough microphones that will do what is needed out of a modern studio, but I've not really had much of a game plan as of yet - sadly. How does one get to your side of the "street", where you go from starting out to sustainability?

name brand and quality parts are real and cost more, neumann spends hours on QC that adds to cost. But making a copyclone and using technology to eq a "similar" product is cheaper and probably a better deal for home recording people who will never make the billboard. so enjoy! and have a "67" sound in your studio...

It is not about the cost, it is the honest quality that needs to be defined. If Warm says you can buy a 251 for 1k, are you getting the 251 quality? That’s what i’m trying to reveal

Your Elam compresses the signal, and so "clamps & breathes" with it pleasantly. Most noticeable on the acoustic guitar. I find that subtle compression is a characteristic of the best mics. MP is much more sibilant than the others on vocal. WA has a push in nasal region, which is not good for this voice.
