Just found your channel :) Suggest Starlight Nights by Leslie Copus Peltier, "the world's greatest non-professional astronomer". There is a star T Corona Borealis that will go nova this year. Happens about every 80 years. So what was Leslie doing 80 years ago on a cold February morning? The answer is on page 193.

BCH is objectively a more useful version of BTC Does that matter though? No - you could make a better version of BTC every year or so - it's not about the best version of BTC - it's about using something that everybody recognises and understands, and has faith will not randomly change just because somebody (or some people) wish it could be a little bit faster or a little bit cheaper (etc) - if you want to use BCH then go for it (still better than fiat), but just realise that there will be other cryptocurrencies that are beating it and its own game if the goal isn't decentralisation and simple stability of form - I mean, wasn't LTC already around before BCH? Even LTC is a little...well, derivative. Even if LTC was technically slightly slower than BCH, why commit to an entirely new crypto in BCH just because it's, what, 0.001% more useful? Maybe I'm wrong...

Marygrove College was a Catholic women's college in Detroit, MI. My late wife took a bachelor's degree and a master's in human resources at the school. They were well known for providing college education to a large segment of the Black women's community of the Detroit area. I recall the cheers of Black families as their women, having already raised their children, marched to the podium as the first college graduates in their families. The school was established by the religious order, Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Monroe campus served the young women entering the order at the mother house in that city. Declining enrollment forced the closing of the college not many years ago.

Ah, I remember Rudin from my first real analysis class, the first time in my life a math class was difficult. And now I’ve quit grad school despite my math ability, because I’m too lazy to do hard things. The beginning of the end.

I used a more gentle intro called "Complex Variables and Applications" by Ruel Churchill. It supplied the motivation and followed u p with the rigor. This one starts with the intimidation, much like Barret O'Neal's "Elementary Differential Geometry". Throwing theorems and unmotivated definitions at students does not help them learn. Then they complain that students are afraid of Math.

I like baby and papa Rudin, but while his Functional Analysis is a well written and thorough text for its time, I consider it to insufficiently motivate the subject, which is derived from very concrete needs in physics and pdes. From that era I prefer the book of Yosida

This was the text for my first year Analysis classes in grad school in the '70-'71 school year. I actually was restarting that year as I had been drafted into the Marines in 1968 during my first, first semester. A few months before I was separated from active duty I found out this would be the text and I ordered a copy. I studied it evenings and weekends and managed to get through the first four chapters before school started. I shudder to think of what would have happened if I hadn't had that extra time to study this textbook's first few chapters. It was clear and well-written, but so concise it took a lot of work to fill in the details. I still have my first edition copy. The book is a legend.

In comp sci we have "the red dragon book" about compiler theory, by Aho, Sethi, and Ullman. And an earlier version of the same book, "The green dragon book". Not surprisingly both books have a dragon on the cover. That book is no cakewalk to get through either. But I'll take compiler theory over Fourier transforms any day thank you very much. Also I wonder if that "Calculus and its applications" was my college textbook. It looks very familiar. I've still got it on the bookshelf in my old bedroom in my parent's house. I'll have to take a look next time I'm up there to check on the place.

I admire the classic texts that emphasize intuition and thoroughness more than brevity. Feller's "An Introduction To Probability Theory And Its Application" and Knuth's "The Art of Computer Programming" come to mind. They are scholarly works in multiple volumes.
